Lamisil Once (terbinafine) is a convenient, single-administration solution for athlete's foot. It is a potent product that completely eliminates fungal infections on the feet without the hassle of multiple daily applications of messy creams.
Because Lamisil Once is not used like standard antifungal creams or gels, patients are advised to read the instructions included with each product before use.
A Hassle-Free Fungicide
Treatment with Lamisil Once starts like any other topical antifungal; the gel is applied directly to the infected area and surrounding skin. That is where the similarities end.
After application, the Lamisil Once gel dries into a film on the skin where it remains for several days, busily killing off fungi. Some care needs to be taken to preserve this film; the area should not be scrubbed, rubbed, scratched, excessively exposed to moisture and so forth for several days. Showers and other routine daily activities will not disrupt treatment.
The gel dries quickly---in about 2 minutes---and is not very noticeable; it is clear and odorless once dry. Wearing socks is advisable for the duration of treatment, both to preserve the film and to prevent flakes of the medication from being scattered around on floors.
Though marketed as a treatment for athlete's foot, some people use Lamisil Once to treat fungal infections in other areas---the active ingredient and potency is identical to other Lamisil products used to treat jock itch, ringworm and so forth---but the need to preserve the film's integrity can be a limiting factor; it will not be very effective in areas prone to dampness or that tend to rub against skin or clothing frequently, such as armpits, skin folds or the groin.
Because Lamisil Once is designed to treat athlete's foot, each tube contains just enough gel to cover both feet one time; in other words, each tube is one dose. A tube is usually more than sufficient for treating areas other than the feet.
Itching, burning and other symptoms of a fungal infection typically begin to subside a day or two after Lamisil Once is applied. The infection should begin to visibly improve within two or three days; results should be very noticeable within one week of application. It may take up to four weeks for skin to fully heal and appear normal again, even if the infection is gone.
How to Use Lamisil Once
Lamisil Once should be applied to clean, dry skin and ideally the application site will not be exposed to water for the first 24 hours following administration. For this reason most people prefer to take a shower shortly before using the product; just be sure feet (or other application sites) are thoroughly dry before use.
The gel should be spread over the affected area and extend a short way onto surrounding healthy skin. For athlete's foot, ensure the medication is between toes and covers toenails; work down from the toes to cover the rest of the foot. The manufacturer recommends treating both feet even if only one foot shows symptoms of infection.
Allow the gel to dry before contacting floors or clothing; this should only take 2 or 3 minutes. Wash hands thoroughly after handling the gel.
For the first 24 hours try to avoid getting the affected area wet. After the initial 24 hours showering may resume as usual, but take care not to scrub the application site. Likewise use care when drying treated skin; patting dry is fine but rubbing the area with a towel may remove the film.
One of the bigger challenges of treating fungal infections is reinfection---anything that comes into contact with infected skin can reintroduce the infection or spread it to others; clothing, towels, washcloths, bedding, nail clippers and any other items that may have contacted infected skin should be cleaned frequently or disposed of after contact.
If there are no significant improvements within one week of application, or if symptoms worsen at any time, a doctor or pharmacist should be consulted about alternative options.
