What is Hyzaar?
Losartan Potassium-hydrochlorothiazide is the generic name for Hyzaar made by Teva Pharmaceuticals. Hyzaar relaxes the blood vessels and aids in water control in the body. Hyzaar is primarily used for high blood pressure treatment, but it may also reduce the risks of stroke in some patients.
Hyzaar is marketed in two strengths. The smallest dosage is 50-12.5, which means there are 50 milligrams of Losartan and 12.5 milligrams of Hydrochlorothiazide in that dosage of Hyzaar. The other size is a double of the lower and it is marked 100-25. Most doctors start their patients at the lower dose.
If the lower dosage doesn't positively affect the blood pressure within about three weeks, Hyzaar is increased by either doubling the smaller dosage to twice per day, or using the larger dosage.
For a successful challenge of a Hyzaar patent, Teva Pharmaceuticals was given six months to market a generic medication like Hyzaar. They are allowed to sell the generic Hyzaar without any competition until October 2010. At that time, other companies who have already had their products approved will be able to sell their version of Hyzaar.
Cozaar is the Losartan-Potassium product that was challenged by Hyzaar maker Teva. Because Cozaar had already been approved by the FDA before the suit, it will be available for sell at the same time the other Hyzaar generics are allowed.
Before beginning to take any medicine, you should make sure your doctor knows what medicines you already have in your medicine cabinet. Additionally, before you begin to use Hyzaar, you will need to inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, if you are on a diet and what kind, have decreased urine, or have immune system dysfunctions like lupus.
Hyzaar should not be taken if you have allergies toward Losartan, Hydrochlorothiazide, dyes, sulfa drugs, preservatives, and certain foods. Women who are trying to get pregnant should not take Hyzaar, and those who are already pregnant should not take Hyzaar either. If a woman is breastfeeding a baby, she should not take Hyzaar.
Do not take Hyzaar if you take barbiturates or other blood pressure medicines. Do not take Hyzaar if you take any of the drugs celecoxib, cimetidine, corticosteroids, triamterene, spironolactone, amiloride, fluconazole, lithium, rifampin, tubocurarine, cholestyramine, or colestipol.
Hyzaar may be adverse to other medicines that are diuretics, skeletal muscle relaxers, cholesterol-lowering medicines, or prescription pain medicines. Do not take ibuprofen or naproxen while using Hyzaar.
Hyzaar Side Effects
Skin problems that may manifest themselves as rashes, hives, or swelling of the lips, tongue, or face are allergic reactions to Hyzaar. Breathing problems or irregular heartbeat, chest pain, palpitations, and fast pulse rate are signs of Hyzaar allergies.
If you are allergic to Hyzaar, you might have blistering or peeling of the skin, even inside your mouth. Aches and pains like muscle cramps, stomach pain, and worsened gout pain are all indicative of a Hyzaar allergy.
Other side effects of Hyzaar may include dark urine, problems passing urine, and change in the amount of urine. Lightheadedness, persistent dry cough, bleeding or bruising for no apparent reason, and yellowing of the skin and eyes are all possible reactions to Hyzaar.
