Emla Patch

What is Emla Patch?

The Emla Patch is used to numb a small section of skin.  The Emla Patch can be used prior to receiving a shot from a hypodermic needle or before a vaccination for the following maladies:

Haemophilus Influenzae b

Hepatitis B

Because the Emla Patch has not been tested with other vaccines, its effect on the immune system is not known.

The Emla Patch represents EMLA, a topical anesthetic containing the active ingredients lidocaine 2.5% and prilocaine 2.5%.  The Emla Patch causes a temporary loss of feeling on the epidermis and dermis layers of the skin.  The Emla Patch consists of a white patch with the medication and a tan adhesive.  A peel-off backing protects the medicated pad until it is ready for use.

Emla Patch Precautions

The Emla Patch should not be used on infants less than three months of age unless instructed by a doctor.  The Emla Patch should also not be used for any procedure requiring a large area of the body to be numbed.  Emla Patch is not recommended for use on anyone who has methemoglobinemia (blood disorder) or on infants under twelve months of age who require methemoglobin-inducing agents.  Emla Patch should not be used if you are allergic to lidocaine or prilocaine or any ingredient within the Emla Patch.

Do not allow Emla Patch close to the eyes because it can cause irritation.  If EMLA accidentally gets into the eyes, rinse with water immediately and keep eyes protected until the feeling returns.

Emla Patch should not be used inside the ears or mouth, nor should it be swallowed.  In the event the Emla Patch is swallowed, a doctor or poison control center should be contacted immediately.

Do not use Emla Patch on areas where the skin is broken.  Do not use the Emla Patch in the presence of dermatitis or other skin conditions or disorders.

Emla Patch Side Effects

Use only the dosage of Emla Patch prescribed by your doctor.  Serious side effects may result from using more than the recommended dose of Emla Patch.  These may include:

Numbness of the tongue

Sight or hearing problems

Darkened skin around the nails and lips

Difficulty breathing

Unusually slow heartbeat

Excessive sweating

If you experience any of these side effects with the Emla Patch, consult your physician immediately.

Emla Patch Dosage and Use

Unless otherwise instructed by your doctor, use only one Emla Patch for each application.  When the Emla Patch is applied, it requires about an hour before it takes affect.  When the Emla Patch is removed, the numbness may increase.  Based on a 1 or 2-hour application time, the Emla Patch should numb the area for 1 to 2 hours.

Cost of Emla Patch

The Emla Patch can be bought online in quantities as few as two patches or any multiples.  The cost for two patches runs about $4.50 each and in quantities of twenty or more, the price can be as low as $3.65 each.  The Emla Patch is a non-prescription over the counter product.
