De-Worm (mebendazole) is used to cleanse the digestive tract of parasitic worms in patients 2 years old and up. The chewable, orange-flavored tablets make administration a breeze even in children and in most cases treatment takes only 1 to 3 days.
There is a common misconception that parasitic worms are not a problem in developed nations. In fact some types of worms are common, but often overlooked because symptoms can be misleading; few people would associate tooth grinding, mood swings, sleep difficulties and other seemingly-unrelated ailments with parasitic worms.
Left unchecked, these parasites can cause serious health problems. The body may be denied vital nutrients and the immune system can be weakened over time. Ultimately the entire body can be effected, detracting from physical and mental health as well as appearance.
Fortunately with medications like De-Worm getting rid of these unwelcome parasites is easy, safe and inexpensive. De-Worm destroys a range of commonly-encountered worms, including:
Once the parasites are killed by De-Worm they are either removed from the body with bowel movements or, in some cases, are simply absorbed by the body. Symptoms caused by the parasites will start to improve within a few days of completing treatment. It may take several months for full recovery.
Getting the Most from De-Worm
As previously mentioned, De-Worm comes as chewable tablets. These tablets are equally effective if chewed, swallowed whole, or crushed and mixed into food or drink. Each tablet contains 100 mg mebendazole, which is the standard dose. Doses do not need to be modified for patients aged 2 and up; for patients under 2 dosage should be determined by a doctor.
Treatment varies to some extent depending on the type of worm being eradicated; identifying the particular parasite is something a doctor will need to do in most cases. If unsure, the 3-day treatment route should be followed. The medication will eradicate multiple types of worms, if present, without increasing dosage.
For pinworms or threadworms:
For roundworms, hookworms and whipworms:
Treatment is repeated after two weeks to kill off any parasites that may have hatched since the first round of treatment. If there is reason to believe parasites are still present after the second round of treatment, a doctor should be consulted.
Some parasites, notably pinworms, are easily spread with close contact with other people; the whole family may benefit from using De-Worm if one individual is found to have worms.
Warnings & Adverse Effects
Because little of De-Worm is absorbed into the bloodstream, serious side effects are very unlikely. Some patients do experience gastrointestinal symptoms, such as nausea, cramping and diarrhea. These symptoms are not cause for concern unless severe.
The active ingredient in this medication is known to cause birth defects in animals; it is unknown how it effects unborn human babies or if it passes through breast milk. Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to become pregnant should avoid using De-Worm.
Interactions with other medications are unusual but can happen. Check with a doctor or pharmacist before taking De-Worm if also taking other medications.
