Many allergic attacks are associated with either dermal or else nasal inflammations. Allergies that involve nasal inflammations are referred to as "allergic rhinitis," and are most commonly characterized by runny noses, watery eyes, and sneezing. Hay fever is also known as seasonal allergic rhinitis, and is known as one of the most common forms of allergies in existence. Some episodes of allergic rhinitis, however, could become so severe as to be life-threatening. To prevent this affliction from reaching extreme levels, antihistamines like Clarinex provide invaluable help.

Clarinex as an antihistamine distinguishes itself by being non-drowsy. Because of this trait, Clarinex is the antihistamine frequently chosen by people on the go. Some traditional antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine (known in the market as Benadryl) have some sedative effects which prevent them from becoming feasible for use on busy days, when reflexes and clarity of thought are essential. This is why such drugs are best taken at night, before going to bed.

In both cases, the time of dissolving, or the time of taking the medicine, are not equivalent to the time it takes for the medicine to take effect. In other words, this medicine may not offer immediate relief, and therefore may not be best to take in emergency cases. It may take around 30 minutes or an hour to take effect, but once it does, its effects last for 24 hours. One thing to remember about Clarinex is that it is a maintenance medicine: it is taken regularly once every 24 hours, for maximum protection against severe allergy attacks. But if an incapacitating allergy attack has already occurred, the best thing to do is to contact the nearest medical center before administering or taking any medication.

The active ingredient in Clarinex is desloratadine, a major metabolyte of loratadine. Loratadine may still be found in the market under the name Claritin, though the spelling may vary in different geographical locations - it is sometimes spelled Clarityn or Claratyne, depending on the whereabouts of the pharmacy dispensing it. Both Clarinex and Clarityn may be dispensed as over-the-counter (OTC) pharmacy-only medicines, in countries such as Canada and New Zealand.

The main benefit of desloratadine is perhaps the cost. The American Family Physician journal came out with an article in 2003 stating that the beneficial effects of loratadine and desloratadine are essentially identical, but desloratadine - as it is dispensed in the United States - may cost slightly less. Clarinex was priced lower than Claritin by its manufacturer, Schering-Plough, close to the end of their exclusivity to Claritin in the United States in December 2002. There have been studies launched to determine if desloratadine is in fact longer-lasting than loratadine, but there have been no conclusions drawn to this effect.

Besides the non-drowsy effects of desloratadine, it is also considered safe for use for many patients, even children as young as 6 months old.

The side effects of desloratadine are very mild. At best it only produces side effects that are reminiscent of a cold, such as mouth dryness and sore throat. But very rarely, it also produces drowsiness. This may be no cause for alarm, but it may also be an indication that you should shift to another antihistamine. It is best to consult your doctor or pharmacist about alternative medications.

While Clarinex is popular for treating allergic rhinitis, it could be effective even against skin allergies. Hives are a common skin allergy, and the causes are sometimes unknown. For treatment of allergic hives, Clarinex in its regular and Reditabs form would be effective. Score another one for desloratadine!
