What is Bumex?
Bumex is the trade name for Bumetanide. Bumex lowers any excessive water and salt in the body by causing an increase in urination. Bumex is often prescribed for fluid retention (edema) when it is present with liver or kidney disease. Bumex is also used when water retention is associated with forms of congestive heart failure. Many times, Bumex is prescribed with other drugs to help treat high blood pressure.
Bumex is considered a diuretic, and is often called a "water pill." Another phrase used with Bumex is "loop diuretic" because of the area of the kidneys (loop of Henle) that is affected by it. Bumex acts to increase the water and salt the kidneys take out of the blood. By removing water, Bumex lowers blood volume.
What Side Effects Are Attributable to Bumex?
Known side effects for Bumex include headaches, low blood pressure, muscle cramps, dizziness, and nausea. Concurrent with this, if there is too much potassium loss you may experience unusual tiredness, weakness, or dry mouth. Not all side effects can be anticipated, and any changes that occur while taking Bumex should be reported to your doctor.
What Precautions Should You Take with Bumex?
Bumex should only be taken as prescribed by a doctor. It is not a diet drug and should not be taken as a means to lose weight. Bumex is a powerful drug that may cause serious problems if taken incorrectly. Excessive doses of Bumex can decrease water levels in the body as well as potassium and other minerals that your body needs to function properly.
Bumex comes in a tablet to be taken orally. Dosage is usually once per day, but your doctor will decide if that is sufficient. It is not necessary to take Bumex with food.
Bumex should be taken at the same time each day if it is prescribed for continued use because this keeps the levels of your blood even.
Because Bumex increases the frequency of urination, it should be taken early in the day rather than at night. If you are taking Bumex more than once per day, do not take the last dose later than 6:00 p.m. at night. If a dose is missed, take Bumex as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dosage when you remember, skip the forgotten one and resume your regular dosage when it is time. Never take two doses at the same time to make up for one that was missed.
Store Bumex at room temperature.
When Should Bumex Not Be Used?
If you are sensitive to certain drugs, or if you have had allergic reactions to drugs similar to Bumex, do not take the medication unless under a doctor's orders. If you are allergic or sensitive to Furosemide (brand name Lasix), you should not take Bumex. Always let your doctor know of unusual reactions to Bumex or any other drug. Other drugs may have an adverse affect on the use of Bumex, so always be sure your doctor knows what other drugs you are taking.
