Beconase nasal spray is a medical spray used to fight dust allergies, pet allergies, hay fever, and other nasal irritations. The active ingredient in Beconase is 50 micrograms of Beclomethasone Dipropionate BP and is generally the metered dose in every spray. The spray also contains other ingredients such as microcrystalline cellulose, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, dextrose, polysorbate 80, purified water and the preservatives benzalkonium chloride and phenylethylalcohol. The spray is manufacteured by Glaxo Welcome SA and comes in packets of either 100 or 180 sprays.
The effective ingredient in Beconase, Beclomethasone Dipropionate, is a corticosteroid which has an anti-inflammatory action and when used every day can produce significant results. The spray reduces swelling and irritation in the nasal passage and eases painful symptoms.
Beconase can be used all year round to prevent allergies and its side effects such as sneezing, runny nose, itchiness around the nasal passage and a blocked nose. These sorts of allergies are generally brought on by various triggers such as pets, dust and pollen. Once the nasal passages have been cleared with the help of Beconase, pain and pressure around the eyes and nose is alleviated.
Before using Beconase, a patient should ensure that they are not pregnant, not breastfeeding, not allergic to any of the ingredients, does not have a nose infection and has not received steroid injections or tablets recently. Beconase should also only be taken by adults over the age of 18.
The recommended dose for Beconase is 2 metered spray in each nostril every morning and night. Patients should always follow the instructions in the leaflet included in the package and should refer to a pharmacist if they have any questions. Beconase is also only for use in the nose, and should be kept away from ones eyes and mouth.
A patient must shake the Beconase spray before use and one will feel the active ingredients going to work quickly and effectively. It might take up to 2-3 days for Beconase to reach its maximum effect so it is recommended to start taking the spray a few days before potential exposure to allergy triggers. Once a patient feels that their symptoms have improved, the dosage may be reduced to one spray in the morning and evening and increased once more if the symptoms get worse. It is suggested that a patient not use more than 8 sprays within a 24-hour period.
Beconase spray does not cause drowsiness and will not affect a persons ability to drive or use heavy machinery. A person can also drink alcohol while using the spray. Beconase may cause sneezing immediately after use and occasionally a person may experience a strange taste or smell, occasional nosebleeds or slight irritation. If any of these side effects occur for an extended period, a doctor should be consulted.
Patients should consult a doctor if their symptoms have not improved within 14 days of taking Beconase spray and the product should not be used continuously for more than one month without consulting a doctor. If a patient accidentally forgot to take one of the doses, he can simply take the next one when it required. Patients should report any overdose of the drug.
It essential to remember, as with all medication, that Beconase must be kept out of reach of children. The spray should be kept in a cool dry place and expiration dates should be noted. Beconase spray should be discarded after three months of opening the bottle.
