Nystaform (nystatin, chlorhexidine) is a cream used to treat topical fungal infections.
This medication contains two active ingredients:
Together nystatin and chlorhexidine destroy the microbes causing the infection and protect it from further contamination. Nystatin is effective against Candida species---including the notorious C. albicans---and Trichophyton species. Chlorhexidine is effective against a wide range of microorganisms.
Note that while chlorhexidine is widely available over-the-counter and often applied to mucous membranes and open wounds, nystatin should not be. Nystaform cream should be used only on intact skin and not ingested or applied to open wounds or mucous membranes where it will be more readily absorbed into the bloodstream.
A Simple & Effective Solution
Fungal infections are very common, and the bulk of them are the result of Candida or Trichophyton species overgrowth. Many types of fungus occur naturally on the skin and in the body, and are often beneficial in reasonable numbers. Problems arise when those numbers become imbalanced and produce an infection, such as:
Fungal infections often start out as little more than a mild annoyance but can quickly become disruptive, causing pain, itching, unsightly rashes, skin discoloration, and often produce an unpleasant odor. Left untreated fungal infections can cause permanent damage and, if the infection becomes systemic, can even be fatal, though this is unlikely unless there is significant immune system impairment.
Nystaform is designed to eradicate topical infections; both its ingredients attack fungal cells and chlorhexidine further protects the skin from opportunistic bacteria that might take advantage of skin weakened by the fungal infection. Because Nystaform is oriented toward fungal infections, it is unlikely to have significant effect on infections that are primarily bacterial in nature.
The cream should be applied directly to the infected area two or three times per day. Some people notice improvements within days of starting treatment, but it may take a couple of weeks for significant improvement to be noticed. Treatment should continue for one week after all signs of infection have disappeared. If there are no noticeable improvements after two weeks of treatment or if the condition worsens during treatment, alternative treatments should be considered.
Nystaform is also available in Nystaform HC, a similar product which also contains hydrocortisone to soothe inflammation, itchiness and other symptoms associated with infection.
Precautions Before Use
The majority of people experience no side effects from Nystaform if used as directed. A small percentage of patients have an allergic reaction to the medication or its inactive ingredients; burning, itching, and redness at the application site are symptoms of this. Mild stinging when the cream is applied is not cause for concern.
Nystaform should be applied to clean, dry skin and not be covered with tight clothing or wound dressings. Wait at least 30 minutes after applying Nystaform before using other topical products, such as moisturizers, on the application site.
Nystaform should not be used long-term; one or two weeks should be sufficient to clear up most fungal infections. A doctor should be consulted if there are no significant improvements by this time; it's possible the infection is not fungal or there are some other complications preventing healing.
It is unlikely that Nystaform will cause harm to unborn or nursing babies if used while pregnant or breastfeeding. Caution should be used to avoid getting the cream on the breast where a nursing infant might ingest it.

Nystaform HC (nystatin, chlorhexidine, hydrocortisone) offers a triple-pronged approach to treating fungal skin infections. It destroys fungus, protects the skin from other microbes, and soothes angry, itching skin.
This product comes as a cream, applied directly to the infected skin two or three times per day. Most infections are cleared up in one to two weeks of treatment. The cream is effective against both Candida and Trichophyton species of fungus, which are responsible for the majority of topical fungal infections. Nystaform HC is often used to treat:
It is a topical-only treatment and should not be used on open wounds, on mucous membranes, or ingested.
What to Expect from Nystaform HC
Unlike most antifungal creams, which contain only an antifungal medication, Nystaform HC has three active ingredients:
Together these three ingredients combat the infection, keep the skin clean, and soothe the redness, itching, and inflammation associated with fungal infections. The inactive ingredients in the cream also help soothe and hydrate skin.
Nystatin HC is easy to use:
Relief of pain, itchiness, redness and inflammation is usually noticeable with the first few days of treatment---sometimes with the first application. It may take up to a week for significant results to be seen in the infection itself. If the infection is not noticeably improved, or worsens, by the end of a week of treatment, it's unlikely that Nystaform NC will provide benefit with continued use; alternative treatments should be considered.
If the infection is noticeably better but not completely resolved after a week, treatment may continue for another week. Using Nystatin HC for more than two or three weeks is not recommended without doctor approval; extended use can cause damage to the skin, particularly if used on the face.
Side Effects & Precautions
Nystaform HC is unlikely to cause side effects if used as directed. It may sting a bit the first few times it is applied, but should not cause redness, swelling, or pain---these are signs of an allergic reaction and use should be discontinued.
If used long-term, products containing steroids like hydrocortisone can cause the skin to thin and become more susceptible to infection. Used frequently on the face, products like this can exacerbate acne, rosacea, and other inflammatory conditions; it can also cause steroid rosacea, particularly if treatment ends abruptly. Infrequent use on the face is unlikely to cause problems, but infrequent use is also unlikely to resolve a fungal infection.
Treatment should continue for several days, ideally a week, after the condition appears to have fully cleared up. This is to eradicate any lingering microbes and prevent resistant strains from developing.
Since little of Nystaform HC is absorbed into the bloodstream it is unlikely to cause harm to unborn or nursing babies if used while pregnant or breastfeeding.
Other Anti-Fungal Options
This product is also available without hydrocortisone as regular Nystaform. The antifungal agent in this product, nystatin, is also available as a stand-alone treatment in Nystatin Cream, and as Nystatin Oral Solution for oral thrush or other fungal infections of the mouth. Stand-alone Hydrocortisone is also available.
