Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturing country depending on the country of origin.

Anawin (bupivacaine) is a local anesthetic delivered via injection. It is usually administered by health care professionals, either in a hospital setting or when receiving care in-home, rather than self-administered by the patient.

The medication inhibits the transmission of nerve impulses to the brain. It can be used in a range of scenarios, with the more common applications including:

  • Epidural
  • Local anesthetic during dental procedures
  • Local anesthetic prior to surgery
  • Alleviation of post-surgical pain
  • Peripheral nerve block
  • Sympathetic nerve block
  • Caudal block
  • Retrobulbar block

Anawin is often used along with other medications, such as epinephrine or opioids, to enhance effectiveness or duration.

Dosage & Administration

As previously mentioned, this medication is typically administered via injection by a health care professional. It is not possible to broadly summarize dosage; dosage will vary considerably depending on the condition being treated and numerous personal variables, such as age, weight, medical conditions present, and so forth. Other medications being taken or simultaneously administered will also influence dosage.

In the rare instances in which this medication may be administered by the patient or a care provider dosage and administration instructions will be provided and should be explicitly followed. Administration is often demonstrated by a professional so the patient or caretaker knows exactly what to do when outside medical supervision.

Warnings & Side Effects

Anawin is a very potent medication that carries risk of serious, even potentially fatal, complications if used or administered improperly. Commonly encountered side effects include:

  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Tremors
  • Chills and/or shivering
  • Restlessness and/or anxiety

The above side effects are generally not cause for alarm if mild. If they become severe they should be brought to the attention of a doctor. In other words, medical attention is warranted if experiencing:

  • Severe anxiety, restlessness, confusion
  • Difficulty breathing or speaking
  • Rapid, slow, or erratic heartbeat
  • Strong ringing in ears
  • Changes in vision
  • Tingling or numbness around the mouth (unless Anawin was administered in the mouth)
  • Feeling abnormally hot or cold
  • Seizures

Patients or caretakers who have any questions or concerns about Anawin or its side effects should not hesitate to contact a medical professional.

A. Burkhart

Anawin

Had surgery and was sent home with a pump that dispensed doses of bupivacaine. It kept me comfortable enough to sleep, which I did a lot the first few days I was home. I was a little irritable (accord...ing to my husband at least, haha) but whether or not that's a side effect is hard to say. All in all it worked great, very little pain.
