Adra-Pro (adrafinil) is a eugeroic medication, meaning it promotes wakefulness and alertness. It is commonly used by individuals who have narcolepsy, work unusual or very long shifts, are experiencing jet lag, and so forth.

The medication is also a nootropic, which, in addition to producing wakefulness and alertness, enhances mental clarity, concentration, and memory.

Adra-Pro is a stimulant, like caffeine and many recreational drugs. However, it is not considered addictive and does not produce many of the negative effects associated with other stimulants, such as insomnia, irritability, anxiety, and so forth.

This product is unlikely to produce serious side effects if used as recommended, which is 300 to 600 mg (one or two tablets) per day. Individuals who make use of Adra-Pro for more than a few consecutive weeks are advised to have regular liver function tests every 6 months; the medication can cause elevated liver enzymes if taken long-term.

Uses & Abuses

Adra-Pro is approved in the European Union as a narcolepsy treatment. Most other uses are off-label, which are legal provided a doctor was involved in prescribing the medication. Patients in some locations may have a difficult time finding a doctor to prescribe Adra-Pro for use as a nootropic, however.

As it is not a controlled substance authorities are not concerned about possession or consumption of this product. An exception here may be sporting authorities; Adra-Pro is considered a doping agent by some and may be tested for.

In treating narcolepsy and other scenarios in which patients struggle to stay awake, Adra-Pro is an effective solution. The medication promotes wakefulness and alertness with no disruptive side effects. Patients do not develop tolerance to Adra-Pro even with long-term use, unlike many stimulants, so it can be used sporadically as-needed or regularly over the long term.

Adra-Pro sees widespread use among college students as a cognitive enhancer; it is among the more popular such medications used for this purpose. As a nootropic information is a little more difficult to find. It is widely agreed that Adra-Pro promotes:

  • Wakefulness
  • Alertness
  • Improved concentration
  • Improved memory
  • Mental clarity
  • Better mood

Some sources also claim the medication causes behavioral changes, such as:

  • Increased talkativeness
  • Increased activity
  • Decreased inhibitions
  • Decreased passiveness
  • Increased boldness

It is very difficult to say how powerful the above effects will be for an individual, if they occur at all. Note that, while the above may sound negative in some cases---such as decreased inhibitions---they are not necessarily so; being inhibited, passive, and timid are not ideal traits in all scenarios.

As the medication promotes wakefulness, cognitive improvements, and activity, some individuals find the medication beneficial in the elderly, particularly those beginning to show signs of dementia. While Adra-Pro has been studied in elderly patients, there are few studies involving dementia patients; use in this area is largely experimental. Some medications act radically different in dementia patients and this use of Adra-Pro is inadvisable without the involvement of a doctor.

Taking Adra-Pro

Adra-Pro comes in 300 mg tablets. The standard dose is 300 mg once or twice per day. Otherwise healthy patients can get away with higher doses---900 to 1200 mg per day---but there's little evidence that this provides increased benefit and it should not be done routinely.

If using Adra-Pro to combat sleepiness a tablet should taken upon waking, and if needed another tablet taken 6 to 12 hours later.

As a cognitive-enhancer, a tablet should be taken 30 to 60 minutes prior to desired effects. Again if needed an additional tablet may be taken 6 to 12 hours later, though needing cognitive enhancement for such a long period should be relatively exceptional.

In both cases use can be as-needed or long term, taken daily for weeks or months. If taking Adra-Pro for more than a few consecutive weeks patients should have a liver screening done; the medication is processed in the liver and can cause elevated liver enzymes. Patients with preexisting liver impairment should avoid this product without explicit doctor approval.

Adra-Pro is not habit-forming and patients do not develop tolerance to it, meaning that dosage does not need to be increased to produce the same effect after some time. Taking one or two tablets---300 to 600 mg---per day should produce the same effects on day one as day one hundred.

Adra-Pro is associated with a few mild side effects:

  • Stomach pain
  • Headache
  • Skin irritation

In general the above are not cause for concern unless severe, and should cease if treatment stops.

As far as more serious side effects, elevated liver enzymes are the only officially reported symptoms. Doctor checkups every six months can monitor for these; if found, stopping the medication---at least until enzymes are back to normal---is recommended.

In practice some patients do report insomnia, anxiety, severe abdominal pain, radical behavior changes, and so forth; these are rare and how they're related to Adra-Pro is unclear. If any concerning symptoms develop during treatment, it is advisable to stop taking Adra-Pro until the cause can be determined.

To be clear there are no deaths, disabilities, or major medical conditions associated with taking Adra-Pro. Taken as directed it is a remarkably safe product.
