Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturing country depending on the country of origin.
Abilify Injection (aripiprazole) is an antipsychotic used to quickly alleviate symptoms of agitation and mania, predominantly in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
This is a fast-acting injection; it should not be confused with Abilify Maintena, which is a long-acting injection administered once every month or two.
Abilify Injection is administered intramuscularly with a syringe. Syringes are not included with the product. Abilify Injection should be stored out of direct light, but does not need to be refrigerated.
Abilify Injection is used to quickly bring mania, agitation, or other distressing and potentially dangerous behavior under control. It is not meant to be a long term treatment, and should not be used when the patient is not manic.
Symptoms this medications alleviates include:
Patients suffering the above are also often depressed and anxious. Inhibitions and impulse control may be greatly reduced. These patients often have little control over thoughts or actions, and can present a serious threat to themselves, others, or property.
Some patients self-administer, but it's also likely that a caretaker will need to administer Abilify Injection as the patient may not recognize the need.
Patients given Abilify Injection typically experience:
If treatment with Abilify Injection is needed for more than a day or two a doctor should be consulted.
Note that Abilify Injection (or any formulation of Abilify) should not be administered to patients with dementia; it will not help and may increase likelihood of death.
Using Abilify Injection
Each vial of Abilify Injection contains 1.3 ml of ready-to-use injectable solution. Each 1.3 ml contains 9.75 mg aripiprazole, which represents one standard dose.
Abilify Injection is administered intramuscularly, meaning into a muscle. Ideally it is administered slowly. The outer upper arm and outer thigh are the most widely used injection sites.
A dose should be administered when agitated behavior is apparent. This can happen while medications to manage the condition are already being taken, or it may happen without. If other medications are regularly taken, double-check with a doctor that Abilify Injection is okay to use.
Standard administration is:
In other words, 9.75 mg may be administered every 2 hours. Administration should cease after 3 injections; medical help should be sought if agitation continues to be an issue. Dosage levels and maximum daily dosage may be modified by a doctor, though doses greater than 15 mg are quite rare.
Patients will most likely be switched to Abilify Tablets as soon as possible.
Abilify Injection does cause side effects in many patients, but, if used properly, side effects are usually mild and not cause for concern.
Patients with certain other medical conditions are more likely to encounter complications while using this medication; discuss risks with a doctor before use if there is a history of:
Abilify Injection can interact with a wide range of other medications and, though not common, these interactions can produce potentially dangerous side effects. Speak with a doctor or pharmacist before mixing this or any other medication.
