Panadol Product Information

Not all paracetamol brands are created equal. Some have additives that imbue them with additional therapeutic properties, and some are not usable by people with different pre-existing conditions. Generic paracetamol, however, is considered one of the most usable and effective relivers of mild to moderate pain. If you are after a painkiller that is affordable, powerful, and safe for general use all at once, you only need to look at the most popular paracetamol brand in the global market: Panadol.

The fame of Panadol is widespread, and for good reason: millions of satisfied users all over the world, and throughout the years, can attest to its effectiveness. It is being sold over the counter in 80 countries and is now considered the most accessible form of paracetamol in the pharmaceutical industry. This is the leading paracetamol brand in the United Kingdom and Australia.

The regular over-the-counter (OTC) version of Panadol contains 500 mg of acetaminophen. Paracetamol is another name for acetaminophen. To avoid confusion, simply remember that "acetaminophen" and "paracetamol" are taken from the two different names of the same chemical compound: PARA-aCETyl-AMino-phenOL and N-ACETyl-para-AMINOPHENol. Health professionals may sometimes shorten the common name of this compound even further to "apap," which stands for N-Acetyl-Para-AminoPhenol.

The exact process of how paracetamol relieves pain and fever has not yet been fully discovered. However, medical experts today believe that it works by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins in the body's central nervous areas, also known as the brain and the spinal cord.

Prostaglandins are found in virtually every human tissue, and serve different functions in different parts of the body. They are produced as a natural response to injury or ailment. One of the effects of prostaglandins is sensitizing nerve endings and causing pain, presumably in order to caution us not to inflict further harm on already upset areas. At times natural processes may be parsed as injuries by the human body. A common example of the production of pain-causing prostaglandins is the case of monthly periods, where the human body sometimes goes on overdrive in its production of prostaglandins.

By hindering the creation of prostaglandins in the central nervous system, paracetamol is able to raise our threshold of pain. Even if the condition that triggered the prostaglandin is still active, the pain is significantly reduced.

The potency of paracetamol has often been compared to aspirin, another popular OTC analgesic. In fact, the painkilling properties of paracetamol and aspirin are considered equal, but paracetamol does not have the anti-inflammatory properties of aspirin. In other words, paracetamol may be used to treat conditions such as arthritis, but it cannot relieve the swelling, redness or stiffness that is characteristic of rheumatoid arthritis, the way aspirin can. Aspirin is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that can temper swelling in addition to providing pain relief.

One disadvantage to aspirin, however, is that not everyone can take it. People with gastrointestinal problems such as stomach ulcers cannot take aspirin, as NSAIDs would normally aggravate an existing gastric disorder. Paracetamol does not upset the stomach, and therefore it is a wise alternative for people who cannot take NSAIDs.

Panadol comes in capsule, tablet and soluble tablet forms. Preparations for adults normally contain 500 mg of paracetamol. This drug is mild enough for use in infants below 3 months of age, in very small doses.

It is usually all right to take Panadol with other medicines. In fact, many preparations of paracetamol in the market come with additives that enhance its analgesic properties. An example is codeine, a sedative which is found in very small amounts in Panadeine, a popular paracetamol-based OTC painkiller. Panadol Ultra also contains a tiny amount (12.8 mg) of codeine. Panadol Extra, on the other hand, contains a 65 mg caffeine additive. Panadol Actifast comes with a number of additives which enable the paracetamol to act more speedily than regular preparations.

Nonetheless, you should take care to avoid other drugs containing paracetamol when you take Panadol, lest the recommended dosage is exceeded. The normal adult dose of Panadol is 500-1000 mg per intake; any higher may cause symptoms that are commonly associated with overdose. Examples of these symptoms are diarrhea, nausea or vomiting, stomach cramps and excessive sweating. The total dose of Panadol should not be more than 4000 mg a day.

If you are taking Panadol with additives, such as Panadol Extra and Ultra, you should also take care not to take other substances that will inject additional caffeine or codeine in your body. The extra chemicals may compound the effects of the medicine and cause unpleasant side effects, like heart palpitations (in the case of caffeine) or drowsiness (in codeine).

Panadol is a pain reliever containing paracetamol, which is used for the fast, effective temporary relief of pain and discomfort associated with headache, period pain, colds and flu, tension headache, backache, and muscular aches.  Panadol is suitable for asthmatics who are sensitive to aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and is also suitable for breast feeding mothers.

What types of pain is Panadol suitable for?

The paracetamol in Panadol is an effective analgesic for acute or chronic mild-to-moderate pain.  Conditions for which there are data supporting the efficacy of paracetamol for pain relief include:

  • Headaches
  • Migraine
  • Back pain
  • Toothache
  • Sore throat
  • Period pain
  • Muscular pain
  • Colds and flu
  • Reduces Fever

How does Panadol work?

The paracetamol in Panadol works by blocking the production of chemicals, known as prostaglandins, which are involved in pain transmission.  But, unlike aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as ibuprofen, it blocks them in the brain.  In addition, paracetamol has also been found to act directly on nociceptors and this may reduce the signaling of the pain stimulus itself.

Safety effects and safety issues

Side effects are rare with paracetamol when it is taken at the recommended doses.  One advantage of paracetamol over aspirin and NSAIDs is that it doesn’t irritate the stomach or cause it to bleed, potential side effects of aspirin and NSAIDs.

Always read the label carefully and use strictly as directed.  If symptoms persist or side effects develop, see your healthcare professional.

Do not use Panadol Osteo

  • If you are allergic to Paracetamol
  • If using other medicines containing paracetamol
  • More frequently than every 6 hours
  • On children below age 12
  • For more than 48 hours for children aged 12-17 except on medical advice
