Xtane (exemestane) is an aromatase inhibitor predominantly used to treat or prevent estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer in post-menopausal women. The medication Inhibits the body's production of estrogen, starving the cancer cells and halting cell growth and reproduction.

Xtane is typically prescribed to post-menopausal women who:

  • Have been taking tamoxifen for two to five years.
  • Have already undergone surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy.
  • Are unable to take or have not responded well to other treatments (allergies, severe side effects, etc).
  • Are at high risk of developing breast cancer.

Xtane should not be administered without explicit doctor permission to:

  • Pre-menopausal women.
  • Men.

Women who take Xtane to prevent breast cancer have improved odds of doing so, though it is not typically prescribed unless there are indications that breast cancer is likely, such as a family history.

Women who have early breast cancer may take Xtane to slow its growth and prevent spread to the other breast.

Xtane is sometimes effective when tamoxifen alone has failed to slow cancer growth in advanced breast cancer.

Taking Xtane

Xtane comes in 25 mg tablets, which is what most women are prescribed. One tablet is taken daily, with or shortly after a meal. Tablets should be taken at the same time each day to maximize the medication's presence in the body.

Treatment typically lasts two to five years, though there are variations. Other medications may or may not be prescribed along with Xtane. Patients are strongly encouraged to avoid taking any other medicinal product---including over the counter vitamins and supplements---without first running it by a doctor.

Most women are aware that breast cancer is a very serious disease. Regular doctor checkups are important throughout treatment, to monitor its state as well as ensure medications are working as intended. Women are strongly advised to attend all scheduled doctor visits, and to contact their doctor with any questions or concerns.

Some other things to keep in mind:

  • Notify physicians or dentists that Xtane is being taken before undergoing any procedures.
  • The medication may reduce bone density; bone density tests may be done prior to starting treatment and periodically throughout treatment.
  • Xtane may interact with other medications, including prescription, non-prescription, supplements, and vitamins, which may reduce its effectiveness and/or produce side effects. Speak with a doctor or pharmacist before mixing medications.
  • Though sometimes used in pre-menopausal women, Xtane should never be used if pregnant or trying to become pregnant.

Xtane can be sensitive to storage conditions, losing effectiveness if kept in direct sunlight, exposed to moisture, or if kept for long periods below 15 degrees C (60 degrees F) or above 30 degrees C (86 degrees F).

Potential Complications

Xtane can, and probably will, produce at least a few side effects. Fortunately most are mild and often indistinguishable from the effects of menopause, including:

  • Hot flashes
  • Fatigue
  • Upset stomach
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Headache
  • Sweating
  • Joint pain

Though rare, some patients may experience more severe side effects which warrant medical attention:

  • New or unusual bone pain
  • Vision problems
  • Swelling in hands or feet (edema)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Confusion
  • Difficulty speaking
  • Loss of balance

Patients taking Xtane should not take estrogen supplements of any kind.
