T-Bact (mupirocin) is a topical ointment used to treat skin infections from the bacteria Staphylococcus. This product is rarely used in infections not caused by Staphylococcus and is unlikely to provide benefit in viral or fungal infections.

The medication is an RNA sythetase inhibitor, which works by causing bacteria to produce abnormal proteins needed for survival; unable to utilize these faulty proteins, the bacteria die.

T-Bact should not be applied to mucous membranes unless instructed to do so by a doctor. Likewise it should not be used for more than 10 consecutive days due to concerns that the bacteria may develop resistance to the medication.

What to Expect from T-Bact

Ideally the microbes causing the infection will be identified by a doctor prior to starting treatment, to ensure the bacteria is in fact susceptible. While Staphylococcus infections---often called "staph infections"--- are quite common, most patients are unable to distinguish between it and infections caused by other bacteria.

There are some strains of Staphylococcus bacteria that have already developed resistance to T-Bact, and misusing the medication---not using it long enough or using it for too long---both cause further resistance to develop. It's important to use as T-Bact as directed, and it's important that a doctor is involved.

On the other hand, T-Bact can be quite effective at eradicating bacterial infections resistant to other medications, including the notorious methicillin-resistant S. aureus, better known as MRSA. Again, the offending bacteria will need to be identified by a physician to choose the optimal treatment.

In most cases, when used to target susceptible staph infections, T-Bact starts producing good results quickly---often after the first application. Infections are often cleared up well within 10 days.

T-Bact Administration

One of the most common uses for T-Bact is to treat impetigo, a common skin infection that can produce uncomfortable and unsightly symptoms. If treating impetigo keep in mind that the conditions is very contagious and easily spread. Wash hands thoroughly after each application and carefully sterilize or dispose of any materials that have contacted the infected area.

T-Bact is sometimes used in other infections as well. Treatment is strikingly similar in the majority of cases, whether treating impetigo or another infection:

  • Apply a dab of the ointment to the target area three times per day.
  • A breathable bandage may be applied over the treatment if desired.
  • Do not cover the application site with an airtight bandage unless instructed to do so by a doctor.
  • Do not use longer than ten consecutive days unless explicitly instructed to do so by a doctor.
  • Do not use T-Bact with other topical treatments unless specifically instructed do so by a doctor.

Patients may experience some relief of symptoms, such as tenderness, itching, or inflammation, within moments of the first application. The condition should be noticeably improved within 5 days of starting treatment. A general rule with antibiotics is that use should continue for three days following the resolution of all symptoms.

If there are no significant improvements within 5 days a doctor should be consulted; alternative treatments will likely be required. Unresponsive conditions may be due to incorrectly identified bacteria or a strain that has already developed resistance to T-Bact.

Potential Complications

Topical treatments are rarely present in the bloodstream in quantities high enough to be harmful, and most patients experience only mild side effects localized to the application site:

  • Stinging
  • Mild pain
  • Mild itching

The above symptoms typically occur only when the ointment is first applied and fade away after a few moments. They're not cause for concern unless severe or persistant.

Unfortunately some patients experience more severe adverse reactions from T-Bact. Consult a doctor if:

  • The infection worsens or spreads during treatment
  • Skin begins to peel or blister at application site
  • New skin infections develop, even if seemingly unrelated
  • Any other moderate to severe irritation develops around application site

Because T-Bact is topical, interactions with orally-administered medications are unlikely. The medication should not applied to mucous membranes or open wounds. If the medication is ingested by children or pets seek emergency medical advice.
