Restandol (testosterone
undecanoate)
is a testosterone replacement therapy for sexually mature men who
aren't producing enough testosterone naturally. This medication
should never be used by children who haven't reached sexual
maturity or women who are pregnant or nursing. In rare cases it may
be used in women who are unable to become pregnant.
Using Restandol
In the vast majority of cases this drug is prescribed to elevate
low testosterone levels in men. Testosterone is the hormone
primarily responsible for the development and maintenance of male
characteristics, function of sexual organs, and sex drive. Severe,
chronically low levels of testosterone will result in the gradual
loss of male characteristics, sexual function and sexual drive.
Testosterone replacement therapies like Restandol restore levels of
the hormone to the normal range, reversing the negative symptoms of
low testosterone.
Restandol comes in 40 mg capsules. Treatment usually begins with 3
or 4 capsules each day, though the dosage is often adjusted after
several weeks of use to maintain ideal testosterone
levels:
- If taking more than one capsule, the total daily dose should be
divided between morning and evening doses.
- If taking an odd number of capsules, the larger dose should be
taken in the morning.
- Capsules should be swallowed whole; do not dissolve, chew,
crush or split capsules in half.
- To ensure proper absorption and prevent stomach upset, each
dose should be taken with a meal.
- Ideally doses are split evenly apart -- every 12 hours -- to
maintain constant levels of the hormone in the body.
It
may take several weeks to several months of treatment before the
full effects are realized and, if the underlying cause of the
deficiency is not addressed, hormone levels will begin to drop
again if treatment is stopped. For many men, treatment with
Restandol will span years.
In very rare instances some men develop intolerance to the
medication with long-term use; switching to a different
administration method such as injections or gels -- which contain
pure testosterone, rather than testosterone undecanoate -- may be a
solution in these cases.
Adverse Reactions
Regular doctor check-ups should be scheduled for the duration of
treatment with Restandol, to monitor its effect as well as to
ensure no negative effects are developing. Men with any
pre-existing conditions or major medical issues should discuss
possible risks with a doctor before use.
In a few cases, the medication should not be used under any
circumstances:
- In men with an enlarged prostate
- In men who have certain types of cancer
- In young men who have not yet achieved sexual
maturity
- In women who are pregnant, nursing, or may become
pregnant
Both
testosterone and testosterone undecanoate are likely to cause
severe adverse effects in unborn babies and children. Sexually
mature women who take this medication are at risk of developing
male characteristics such as facial hair or a deepening
voice.
In otherwise healthy men, most side effects from this treatment are
mild and not cause for concern; in many cases they will disappear
entirely as the body adjusts to treatment. Serious side effects are
often a result of too much testosterone, in which case adjusting
dosage will likely resolve the issue. Side effects to watch out for
include:
- Excessive hair growth
- Prolonged or painful erections
- Irritability or hostility
- Hoarse or deepening voice
- Raised blood pressure
- Metabolic issues
- Enlarged prostate
Restandol
is known to interact with a number of other medications, both
prescription and non-prescription, and even some supplements. There
is a chance interactions may cause serious side effects, but more
likely they will reduce the effectiveness of one or more of the
medications involved. Check with a pharmacist or doctor before
using Restandol with other medications.
