Gabaco (gabapentin) is an anticonvulsant medication with a range of uses, most commonly to prevent some types of seizures and provide relief from neuropathic pain. Off-label it may be used to help address numerous other conditions.

Use of Gabaco is very rare in patients under age 3. It is unusual in those age 3 to 12, and patients in this age group will likely need modified dosing. Gabaco should only be used in those below age 12 with explicit doctor approval and involvement in treatment.

Preventing Seizures

Gabaco's most prominent use, and what it was originally designed to treat, is in preventing the frequency of some types of seizures, such as focal, mixed, or generalized seizures. It is not particularly effective in all types of seizures, and patients are strongly advised to consult a doctor prior to taking Gabaco.

While treatment is very similar in all patients over age 12, dosage is somewhat variable according to personal factors like patient weight, other medical conditions, response to treatment, and so forth. Gabaco use in young patients is most common when treating seizures, and dosage should be determined by a doctor.

In adults:

  • Most patients are started on 900 to 1800 mg per day.
  • Each daily dose should be divided into 3 smaller doses taken throughout the day.
  • Time between doses should be at least 4 hours apart but not be more than 12 hours apart.
  • Daily doses may be increased up to 2400 per day if lower doses do not produce good results.
  • Rarely doses may increase to 3600 mg per day; do not exceed this amount.

It may take several weeks of treatment for Gabaco to become noticeably effective. When working, seizures should occur with significantly less frequency or be eliminated entirely. When seizures do occur they may be less severe than before.

Treatment is typically long term if the medication provides benefit, often spanning years. If taken for more than a few consecutive weeks treatment should not end abruptly; doing so can cause an increase in seizures. A doctor can help develop a discontinuation plan, in which dosage is gradually tapered down over several weeks.

As mentioned above Gabaco is not effective on all seizure types and is not effective for all patients; if effects are not significant after several weeks of use, speak with doctor about alternative options. There are many available.

Preventing Neuropathic Pain

Gabaco's second-most common use is preventing neuropathic pain, or pain resulting from damage to the somatosensory system. It is only rarely administered to patients below age 12 for this purpose.

It is often used to treat pain from:

  • Postherpetic neuralgia
  • Central neuropathic pain
  • Diabetic neuropathy
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Spinal injuries
  • Cancer
  • Similar conditions

Treatment is again similar in most adults, though duration of treatment may vary widely:

  • On day one, a single 300 mg dose is taken.
  • On day two, 600 mg is taken, divided into two 300 mg doses.
  • On day three, 900 mg is taken, divided into three 300 mg doses.
  • Dosage may be increased up to to 1800 mg per day if lower levels are ineffective, divided into 3 doses.
  • Doses higher than 1800 mg per day are unlikely to provide additional relief.
  • Time between doses should be at least 4 hours apart but not be more than 12 hours apart.
  • Treatment may continue as long as needed to manage pain.

When given for pain, treatment may last just a few days for flare-ups or weeks or months in cases of chronic pain. Some individuals notice effects within the first day or two of treatment, but it may take several weeks to provide consistent pain relief in chronic conditions.

Other pain-relief medications may also be taken along with Gabaco, but double-check with a doctor that no drug interactions are likely before taking them.

Off-Label Uses

Gabaco may be used in a wide range of other conditions, though it is not always the most effective option for certain ailments and in some it is controversial:

  • Menopausal symptoms
  • Uremic pruritus in liver failure
  • Restless leg syndrome
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety disorders
  • Migraines
  • Others

Patients interested in Gabaco for off-label uses are advised to find a doctor or organization familiar with using the medication for a given condition. As off-label uses are not approved by regulatory authorities, it can be very difficult to find widely-accepted dosage and administration guidelines.

Results in using Gabaco in the above conditions are mixed. Some patients find it does nothing, while others find it works tremendously well. Most are somewhere in the middle.

Patients with other major medical conditions are strongly advised to consult a doctor prior to starting treatment. As a general rule, 1800 mg per day should not be exceeded.
