Ellence (epirubicin) is an anthracycline chemotherapy medication used, usually along with other medications, to help combat breast cancer. Less commonly it may be used in other types of cancer.

Anthracyclines are a highly effective cancer treatment, used to treat a wide variety of cancers with considerable success. However, it is also a very potent medication and there is a limit to how much a patient can have in a lifetime; what this limit is depends on a variety of factors, including height, weight, other conditions present, other medications being taken, heart function, and others.

How Ellence is Used

Ellence is administered intravenously, and comes in vials containing a sterile, preservative-free, ready-to-use solution.

Note that this medication must be refrigerated at temperatures between 2 and 8 degrees Celsius (36 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit). This may cause the solution to gel a bit. It will return to a usable product after 2 to 4 hours at room temperature. Product taken out of the refrigerator should be used within 24 hours. Ellence should not be frozen, and should be kept out of sunlight.

Ellence is used to help combat:

  • Breast cancer
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Lung cancer
  • Gastric cancer
  • Lymphomas

In many cases Ellence is preferred over doxorubicin in some chemotherapy regimens as it produces fewer side-effects.

This is a potent product, with dosage best determined by a doctor. There are many personal variables that will be taken into consideration to determine dosage. In most cases Ellence is administered in repeated three to four week cycles, though this may vary to some extent. Six cycles of treatment are standard.

Ellence should be administered with a syringe placed directly into the tubing of an IV solution, delivering the drug into the body over several minutes. The medication is a vesicant, meaning it can cause extensive tissue damage if it escapes the vein; this should be attempted only by trained professionals.

Patients taking Ellence should attend regular doctor visits to ensure the medication is working as intended and to monitor for any developing side effects.

Warnings & Side Effects

Patients who have congestive heart failure, have already had high doses of this drug or a similar drug, or those with permanent problems with blood counts should not be given this medication.

Other patients will likely experience some, but not all, side effects. As with most chemotherapy treatments they are somewhat predictable with regard to onset and duration, and in most cases are completely reversible once treatment ends. Side effects are largely dose-dependent, meaning the larger the dose of Ellence the more serious the side effects. A doctor can give other treatments to help address particularly unpleasant side effects.

Within one week of treatment:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Red urine
  • Pain at administration site

Within two weeks of starting treatment:

  • Low blood counts
  • Fatigue
  • Amenorrhea (no menstruation)
  • Hair loss
  • Conjunctivitis
  • Darkening of nail beds
  • Diarrhea

There is some evidence that Ellence causes heart problems in some patients. Patients will be encouraged to attend regular doctor checkups to monitor for developing problems, which can occur years later. Likewise a small percentage of patients develop leukemia years after using Ellence.

Patients taking chemotherapy will be more susceptible to infection for the duration of treatment. Avoid vaccinations, crowds, and infectious people. If experiencing symptoms of infection consult a physician.

Ellence can increase sunlight sensitivity; avoid sun exposure and use sunblock if exposure is unavoidable.

Both men and women should avoid conceiving a child while taking Ellence. The medication can cause serious birth defects.
