Codipar (paracetamol and codeine) is a compound painkiller effective at providing temporary relief for mild to moderate pain. The medication is widely considered safe and has very few side effects when used as intended; improper use, however, can produce very serious adverse effects.
The medication is taken as-needed and shouldn't be used for more than three days consecutively. It is ideal for intermittent pain, such as caused by:
Codipar is also an effective fever-reducer, but is a poor anti-inflammatory. Patients looking for relief from inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis pain, will benefit more from medications with more powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
Treatment Basics
The most important thing to remember while taking Codipar is that too much paracetamol can be quite harmful to the liver. Paracetamol, also known as acetaminophen, is very commonly found in painkillers and cold or flu treatments, both prescription and non-prescription. Carefully check labels of all medications being taken.
Administration in healthy adults is straightforward:
Patients under 12, over 65, or with preexisting medical conditions such as liver or kidney disease may need modified doses; check with a doctor or pharmacist before taking Codipar.
Taking the medication regularly for more than several days presents a few potential problems:
If painkillers are needed for more than three days or are used frequently, it may help to alternate between Codipar and another painkiller with different active ingredients.
Adverse Effects
When used properly, side effects are quite rare. The most common is constipation; increasing fiber intake and staying well-hydrated may help, in more serious cases a doctor or pharmacist can recommend a laxative.
Other relatively common side effects include stomach upset; nausea, vomiting, or stomach discomfort. Eating bland foods with each dose may help ease these symptoms, or, if they are occurring with food, taking on an empty stomach.
Very rarely more serious reactions occur, in which case treatment should be stopped until a doctor is consulted:
Use Codipar with extreme caution when certain preexisting conditions are present:
Adverse effects on unborn and nursing babies is unclear. Parents concerned about safety should discuss the issue with a trusted doctor or pharmacist.
On Addiction
Addiction to Codipar is very unlikely if the medication is used as recommended, and very unlikely to produce serious physical withdrawal symptoms unless used consistently for months or longer. Most patients wishing to quit mild codeine addiction are able to taper off without problem. In more serious cases, a doctor or other professional should be consulted.
