Andriol (testosterone
undecanoate)
is a testosterone supplement typically prescribed to men between 18
and 65 who are experiencing symptoms of testosterone
deficiency.
Though it's been on the market for several decades, Andriol remains
a relatively unique testosterone replacement both in that it's
taken orally, rather than injected or applied topically, and in
that the active ingredient is suspended in oil. Prior to Andriol,
orally administered testosterone, though convenient, tended to
produce liver problems. Andriol's effects are also generally milder
than topical creams.
Why It's Prescribed
In the vast majority of cases this medication is given to adult men
who aren't producing sufficient testosterone naturally. The reasons
for declining testosterone levels vary greatly, but the symptoms do
not:
- Thinning hair or hair loss
- Changing voice pitch
- Loss of bone or lean body mass
- Unexplained weight gain
- Decrease in height
- Diminished sex drive
- Erectile dysfunction
- Fatigue, reduced endurance
- Unusual mood swings
In
short, testosterone is responsible for development and maintenance
of male characteristics. Critically low testosterone not only
produces physical problems, but is often devastating to a man's
self-image as well.
Andriol is among the safest testosterone replacement therapies
available, gently boosting levels of the hormone so the body can
function normally until the underlying cause of the deficiency is
found and addressed.
Dosage & Treatment
In pill form this medication comes in 40 mg capsules. Generally
treatment begins with 3 to 4 capsules each day, tapered off to 1 to
3 capsules daily after several weeks. Each daily dose should be
split as evenly as possible between morning and
evening.
Treatment duration may last weeks to years depending on individual
circumstances.
Andriol should always be taken with food to ensure proper
absorption.
In very unusual circumstances testosterone may be prescribed to
women, and the milder impact of Andriol makes it an ideal choice.
These situations are so uncommon that it's impossible to generalize
treatment; doctor's instructions should be followed
explicitly.
Erectile dysfunction and/or decreased sex drive is a common reason
for men to seek testosterone replacement therapy. If the condition
is caused by testosterone deficiency, replacement therapy will help
-- but it will take some time, days to several weeks depending on
the individual, for the body to adjust to new levels and begin
functioning properly once more.
Warnings & Side Effects
Any product containing testosterone should be handled with extreme
care around children and pregnant women -- even very small amounts
can be harmful to still-growing bodies. That said, Andriol is among
the safer testosterone therapies in this regard; the capsule will
not leave traces of easily-absorbed medication on surfaces as
liquid and cream versions are prone to do.
This product is known to interact with certain other medications,
and even herbal supplements, most commonly:
- St. John's Wort
- Insulin
- Corticosteroids
- Propranolol
- Warfarin
- Cyclosporine
Andriol
shares the same side-effects as any testosterone supplement, though
in some cases, such as liver damage, the effects are typically less
severe.
Serious side effects, which warrant a physician visit,
include:
- Liver issues (yellow skin or eyes, vomiting blood, severe
nausea)
- Shortness of breath
- Excessive bleeding
- Unusually dark stools or urine
- Prolonged or painful erections
Milder
side effects include headache, high blood pressure, nausea, acne,
painful breast area, difficulty sleeping and increased feelings of
aggression. In many cases these symptoms dissipate as the body
adjusts to its new hormonal balance.
Prolonged use of testosterone may result in lower sperm
counts.
