Voltaren (diclofenac) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat mild to moderate pain and inflammation in a wide range of conditions. In many respects it is similar to other NSAIDs, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, as far as benefits and side effects, but many patients find Voltaren to be more helpful in treating pain from inflammatory conditions that other NSAIDs. Voltaren is not particularly effective as a fever-reducer.
Also like other NSAIDs, Voltaren is usually used as-needed and over the short term; treatment should not exceed 14 consecutive days without doctor approval. Risk of serious side effects increase with length of use.
In addition to the tablets on this page, Voltaren is available in a few other formulas:
Note that patients who have had allergic reactions to any other NSAID are at increased risk of having an allergic reaction to Voltaren. All NSAIDs increase risk of complications if taken in the third trimester of pregnancy.
NSAIDs like this product are often viewed as virtually harmless, perhaps because they are so widely used and often available over-the-counter. Patients seeking relief from pain often think little of taking higher doses or using these products for considerably longer than recommended. Be aware that doing so can produce very serious, even fatal, complications. On the other hand, the reason NSAIDs are so readily available is because they are generally very safe if used as recommended.
Voltaren is used to treat pain and inflammation over the short term from injuries or during flare-ups of chronic conditions, such as:
It should not be used as a long-term treatment to manage chronic conditions like arthritis.
Treatment is similar in all conditions:
As with any medication, taking the smallest effective dose for the shortest amount of time is desirable. However, some patients do take Voltaren for longer than the recommended 14 days; in these cases regular doctor checkups are advisable to monitor for any potentially developing side effects.
Warnings & Side Effects
Used as directed, serious side effects from Voltaren are rare. More common side effects are generally not cause for concern unless severe, including:
Even if using the medication as directed some patients are at increased risk of severe side effects. Be alert for warning signs if there is any history of:
Adverse reactions that warrant immediate medical attention include:
As mentioned above, this product---and all NSAIDs---should be avoided during the third trimester of pregnancy.
Voltaren SR (diclofenac SR) is the sustained release version of Voltaren, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to treat mild- to moderately-painful inflammatory conditions.
The SR version is typically taken once or twice per day, while the regular version is taken two to four times per day. On the other hand, the regular version can be split and crushed; Voltaren SR must be swallowed whole.
Like all NSAIDs, Voltaren SR reduces inflammation and the accompanying pain. While it does have some fever-reducing properties, it's not particularly beneficial in that respect and rarely used to lower fever unless accompanied by inflammation. Voltaren SR is also not particularly effective at reducing pain that isn't associated with inflammation, such as diabetic nerve pain.
Taking Voltaren SR
Though limited to painful, inflamed conditions, Voltaren SR is a versatile medication. It is often used to manage pain from acute conditions or to manage flare-ups in chronic conditions, such as:
Dosage and duration of treatment is somewhat variable, though with Voltaren SR dosage is rarely lower than 50 mg and rarely higher than 100 mg in a dose. Patient response is huge factor in dosage strength, assuming there's no preexisting conditions which call for modified dosing. Voltaren SR is usually taken just once per day, though in some instances it can be taken twice per day 12 hours apart.
Treatment should be done at the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible time. In lighter pain this may be a few days; for flare-ups in chronic conditions this may span several weeks. Patients, particularly first-time users of Voltaren SR, should not exceed two weeks of consecutive treatment without involvement from a doctor; a doctor can monitor for developing side effects that might otherwise go undetected until severe.
Precautions & Side Effects
Certain individuals are at increased risk of experiencing serious side effects while taking Voltaren SR, even short term. Check with a doctor before starting treatment if there is a history of:
The above conditions don't necessarily rule out use of Voltaren SR, but patients need to be extra alert for warning signs of potential adverse effects.
Most side effects are not dangerous, including:
Less common but more serious side effects from Voltaren SR include:
Women who are pregnant should avoid use of this or any other NSAID during the third trimester.

Voltaren Rapid (diclofenac) is a fast-acting version of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) Voltaren. The medication is used to relieve mild to moderate pain, inflammation and, to a lesser extent, fever in patients age 14 and up.
Because of the speed with which Voltaren Rapid begins to work it is advantageous in certain conditions, though it has the drawback of being less suitable for long-term use than regular Voltaren products. Treatment with Voltaren Rapid should generally not exceed one week. It is typically used to alleviate symptoms from:
Voltaren Rapid is particularly beneficial as an abortive treatment for migraine headaches compared to regular-release tablets. Speed is critical in relieving migraine symptoms, and Voltaren Rapid starts working 10 to 15 minutes faster than its regular counterparts.
The medication is available in 12.5 mg, 25 mg and 50 mg strengths. Tablets are typically taken as-needed to provide relief from pain and inflammation. Each dose should be followed by a glass of fluid and ideally taken shortly before a meal, as a full stomach will reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
Dosage can vary considerably depending on the condition being treated, age, other medications being taken and a variety of other factors. For best results a doctor or pharmacist should be consulted for ideal dosage. General guidelines are as follows:
Effects begin to be felt around 10 to 15 minutes after administration, compared to 20 minutes or more with regular release tablets. Most patients experience significant relief from mild to moderate pain. Effects last 4 to 8 hours.
Warnings before Use
Side effects associated with Voltaren Rapid are similar to any other NSAID. Unfortunately, given how widely-available some NSAIDs are, many people don't realize that these medications can produce some serious complications, especially if taken long term.
Most side effects are not dangerous, including:
Less common but more serious side effects include:
Though the above adverse reactions are rare, their risk of developing increases the longer the medication is taken; for this reason regular doctor checkups are strongly encouraged if diclofenac products are taken long term.
Some individuals are at greater risk of experiencing serious side effects even it using Voltaren Rapid short term. Check with a doctor before starting treatment if there is a history of:
The above conditions don't necessarily rule out treatment with Voltaren Rapid, but patients need to be extra alert for warning signs of potential adverse effects.
Voltaren Rapid should never be used during the third trimester of pregnancy; this product, and other NSAIDs, can cause complications during birth.
