Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturing country depending on the country of origin.

Seroxat (paroxetine) is a generic name for an SSRI better known by the brand name Paxil, both of which utilize the same active ingredient.

Like all SSRIs Seroxat increases the amount of the neurotransmitter serotonin in the brain, and to a lesser extent norepinephrine. Seroxat, or rather its active ingredient paroxetine, is the most potent SSRI currently available. While it can provide tremendous benefit in patients who need it, it must be used with care to prevent serious side effects.

Uses & Benefits

Seroxat is used to treat the same conditions as Paxil, most commonly:

  • Major depressive disorder
  • Generalized anxiety disorder
  • Social anxiety disorder
  • Panic disorder
  • Obsessive compulsive disorder
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Premenstrual dysphoric disorder

Patients suffering the above often have difficulty doing well in school, at work, and in relationships with friends and loved ones, as they're often struggling with unwanted anxious or depressive thoughts. These patients also often have difficulty concentrating or maintaining concentration.

Those who take Seroxat usually notice some improvement in one or two weeks, but it can take a full month of treatment before significant benefit is seen. Patients usually experience:

  • Improved mood
  • Fewer mood swings
  • Improved ability to control thoughts
  • Improved concentration/focus
  • Improved mental clarity
  • Reduced anxiety

Seroxat may not work for everyone; some individuals simply don't respond to some medications. Some will experience side effects that don't compensate for the medication's benefits. Most patients, however, find Seroxat helps tremendously.

Treatment Overview

Seroxat, like Paxil, is usually administered in tablets. Tablets are best taken in the morning, but if they cause drowsiness they can be taken before bed. Food is optional.

Treatment for all conditions is very similar:

  • Start with 20 mg once per day for one week.
  • If needed, dosage may be increased in 10 mg increments at one-week intervals, up to 60 mg.
  • Do not exceed 60 mg per day without explicit doctor approval.
  • Most patients find 40 mg to be suitable, though some will need 60 mg and some are fine at 20 mg.

Most patients will notice significant improvement within a month of starting treatment, and treatment usually continues for around 9 months. Some patients takes Seroxat for years, though usually at lower doses, around 20 mg per day.

When treatment does end, dosage should be gradually tapered down. Abruptly ending treatment can produce powerful withdrawal effects, including insomnia, nightmares, anxiety, and vertigo. These can be largely avoided if treatment ends gradually.

Potential Side Effects

The majority of side effects from Seroxat, though relatively common, are transient and are not cause for concern unless severe or persistent:

  • Dry mouth
  • Weakness
  • Drowsiness
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Appetite changes
  • Difficulty sleeping

Though rare, Seroxat does occasionally cause more serious side effect. Seek medical attention if experiencing:

  • Severe trembling
  • Seizures
  • Rapid or irregular heart beat
  • Severe restlessness

Sexual side effects are fairly common with Seroxat, including loss of libido, vaginal dryness, erectile dysfunction, and delayed ejaculation. Sexual side effects may or may not be transient while Seroxat is being taken, but nearly always reverse when treatment ends. In the meantime, a doctor may be able to prescribe something to help.

Seroxat can interact with a number of other medications. Be sure to inform the prescribing doctor of all other medications being taken, as well as any changes to medications. MAOIs are of particular concern.

Seroxat is believed to be harmful if taken while pregnant, particularly the third trimester. Let a doctor know right away if pregnancy is discovered, as the medication will likely need to be tapered down before quitting entirely.
