NT Grain - ergotamine - 1mg - 90 TAB Cafergot/NT Grain ergotamine Generic India 1mg 90 TAB DR $70.00 -

Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturing country depending on the country of origin.

NT Grain is predominantly used as an abortive treatment for migraine headaches. Taken at the early symptoms of a migraine, the medication prevents it from developing further and offers relief from pain and auras.

NT Grain contains four active ingredients:

  • Ergotamine is a vasoconstrictor that narrows blood vessels in the head. These blood vessels are often widened during a migraine.
  • Caffeine is also a vasoconstrictor. Relatively ineffective on its own, effects are significantly enhanced with other medications.
  • Paracetamol is a pain reliever and fever reducer that helps alleviate migraine pain.
  • Prochlorperazine helps prevent or alleviate nausea, vomiting, and perhaps auras during a migraine. To a lesser extent it also helps relieve pain.

On their own any one of these medication would likely do little for a migraine; combined they often work quite well. Timing is important---while some benefit will still be had if taken at later stages, effects are best if taken at early symptoms that a migraine has begun.

Some patients use NT Grain to abort cluster headaches, but most find more rapid administration methods, such as injections or nasal sprays, are considerably more effective.

How to Take NT Grain

As an abortive treatment, NT Grain doesn't just mask pain; it stops the entire headache. To do so it should be administered before the migraine has fully developed.

Many migraine sufferers have warning signs that a headache is coming on; auras, nausea, sensitivity to light or noise, neck pain and so forth. If these are experienced, they should be considered the first signs and NT Grain should be taken. For other migraineurs the first symptom is pain. If this is the first symptom, NT Grain should be taken when pain is noticed.

The medication will still provide some relief if taken after a headache is well underway, but is unlikely to completely abort it.

NT Grain will not prevent a headache from occurring if taken before symptoms have started.

To stop a migraine:

  • Take 2 mg at the earliest symptoms of a headache.
  • If the migraine persists, take an additional 1 mg after 30 minutes.
  • If needed, continue taking an additional tablet every 30 minutes, up to 6 tablets total, until symptoms are gone.
  • Do not exceed 6 tablets in 24 hours or 10 tablets in 7 days.

For most patients the first dose of 2 mg completely eliminates the migraine or reduces it to such an extent that it does not interfere with day-to-day activities.

Other headache mitigation techniques---sleeping, laying in a dark room, taking a warm shower and so forth---are advisable if they help, and may hasten NT Grain's effects.

The cause of migraines is unknown, and the symptoms, frequency and severity are highly variable between individuals. Likewise the effectiveness of any given medication is also variable. There are many abortive treatments out there with completely different ingredients; if NT Grain isn't producing good results, consult a doctor about alternative options.

Precautions & Side Effects

NT Grain acts as a vasoconstrictor throughout the whole body. Patients with blood circulation issues or high blood pressure should use NT Grain with caution, preferably after discussing risks with a doctor. It may not be the ideal treatment.

Most side effects are rare and not cause for alarm, but a few do call for emergency attention if experienced:

  • Sudden, severe headache
  • Numbness or weakness
  • Severe confusion
  • Rapid or slow heartbeat
  • Painful cough
  • Difficulty breathing

NT Grain can interact with other medications, including many widely-available over-the-counter treatments. Other migraine treatments, vasoconstrictors, and medications that influence circulation or blood pressure are particular concerns. Double-check with a doctor or pharmacist before taking other medications with NT Grain.
