Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturing country depending on the country of origin.

Norethisterone is a synthetic progestogen which mimics a natural hormone used by the body during pregnancy and at certain points during estrous and menstrual cycles. It was one of the first oral contraceptives to be made widely available.

Norethisterone has a number of other medical uses either by itself or used in conjunction with other medications:
  • Reduces the severity of painful or heavy periods
  • Stops abnormal uterus bleeding
  • Treatment for certain types of breast cancer
  • Treats endometriosis (uterine lining growing outside the uterus)
  • Delays or prevents a period
  • Lessens the severity of pre-menstrual symptoms
This medication comes as a 5 mg tablet regardless of the condition it's prescribed for. For higher dosage strengths, multiple tablets are taken.

Norethisterone for Birth Control:

Combined with œstrogen, Norethisterone is found in an wide assortment of birth control pills. It also comes as a stand-alone pill with no other active ingredients, sometimes called a "minipill".

Norethisterone-only pills are not quite as effective at preventing pregnancy than combination pills, but offer a solution for women unable to tolerate the ingredients in combined oral contraceptives.

As a contraceptive, one pill is taken once a day, like most other other oral contraceptives. Other forms of contraception should be used for the first two weeks of using any birth control pill, and if a dose is missed.

Pre-Menstrual Symptoms:

If taking Norethisterone exclusively to reduce PMS or PMT symptoms, two or three tablets are taken each day during the week preceding the period. It will help prevent:
  • Breast pain
  • Water retention
  • Mood changes
  • Headaches
Treatment for PMT usually lasts for several months at a time, then stopped to see if severe symptoms persist. In many cases symptoms do not return, or remain mild enough to be tolerated without intervention.

Use of this medication for PMT symptoms may cause delayed periods and interfere with fertility for the duration of its use and for several days after.

Other Uses:

Physician instructions will vary widely when Norethisterone is given for purposes other than birth control:
  • To prevent heavy periods the usual dose is one pill twice a day for the week prior to the anticipated period.
  • For breast cancer treatment, 8 to 12 tablets are taken daily. Duration will depend on patient response to treatment.
  • To prevent a period from occurring, a tablet is taken three times a day starting three days before the period is expected to start. The period will be delayed until 2 or 3 days after treatment stops.
  • To stop heavy bleeding, a tablet is taken three times a day for 10 days. Bleeding should stop within 1 to 3 days.
Norethisterone is sometimes given as preventative measure against uterine hemorrhage prior to surgery or certain complicated non-surgical procedures.

Contraindications:

Women with certain health conditions are at higher risk of experiencing severe side effects while taking Norethisterone and should seek an alternative treatment:
  • Hyperlipidemia (high blood fat)
  • History of blood clots
  • History of heart problems or angina
  • Impaired liver function
  • Hypersensitivity to ingredients
Women who are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breast feeding should not use this medication.

Men, children, and post-menopausal women should not use this product without explicit doctor instruction.

Side Effects:

Like all oral contraceptives, Norethisterone may produce side effects ranging from mild to dangerous in a small percentage of women. Speak with a doctor or pharmacist about possible adverse reactions, and read the insert included with the product for more detailed information.

Interactions with other prescription and non-prescription medications may reduce effectiveness.

Before undergoing any medical or dental procedures, notify the physician or dentist of Norethisterone use.

Use in combination with St John's wort may produce potentially fatal reactions. Always speak with a physician before mixing medications.

Norethisterone

My boyfriend and I planned for our first vacation together. The problem: my boyfriend had a certain week in mind and it just so happened that aunt flow was due to start during that week. I always have... terribly painful periods with fainting, vomiting, nausea, and am usually bed bound for the first day or 2 of my period. This medicine saved me from having to deal with that. I started taking it 3 days before I was due to start. I was able to enjoy my vacation, worry and pain-free. My period started 3 days after finishing the last pill. I plan on using this again.

Norethisterone

It saved my romantic Vegas getaway! Shipping was fast with absolutely no side effects at all. I took as directed (for the purpose of delaying my cycle in my case) and the day before I was going to go ...home I forgot one pill and took two so the next day going home I decided to continue the tapering off and just took one. Two days later my cycle started as usual with zero negative effects. THANK YOU! I would happily use this again.

Saved my vacation! I received my Norethisterone within days of ordering it. I began taking it 4 days before I was expecting my period to start. I took it for 10 days while I was on vacation and 2 days... after I stopped taking it my period began. I had no side effects at all... just a fabulous, worry free vacation. I've had 2 periods since.. right on schedule. I would definitely recommend it!!
