Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturing country depending on the country of origin.

Imitrex (sumatriptan) tablets are used for the treatment of migraine headaches and associated symptoms.

A pioneer in the Triptan class of drugs, Imitrex was designed specifically to treat migraines. It has been widely used with great success since it first appeared on the market in the early 1990s.

The medication is effective by addressing two sources of migraine pain:
  • Constricts the dilated blood vessels believed to be the root cause of migraine pain and symptoms; and
  • Interferes with the transmission of pain signals in the brain.
Imitrex is an abortive medication; this means it does not prevent or reduce the frequency of migraines, but will help alleviate or eliminate the pain and symptoms at any stage of an existing migraine, such as:
  • Auras
  • Light, noise and odor sensitivity
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • Mood changes
  • Pain or pressure around eyes and ears
  • Pain or tenderness in the head and neck
Most patients find Imitrex to be so effective that other pain medications are no longer needed.

Taking Imitrex:

Imitrex is usually prescribed in the range of 25 mg to 200 mg per dose. No more than 200 mg should be taken in a 24 hour period, and other migraine medications should also be avoided during this period, unless explicitly instructed otherwise by a physician. If pain is still severe after 200 mg, seek medical attention.

Some patients prefer to start out with lower dosages and take more if it proves insufficient. Multiple doses should be taken at least 2 hours apart.

Ideally Imitrex is taken at the first signs of a migraine. Most migraine sufferers have some advance warning before pain begins, though symptoms vary widely between individuals and may be as diverse as food cravings, visual disturbances, neck stiffness, or moodiness. Taking Imitrex prior to migraine symptoms will not prevent a migraine from occurring.

If unable to take a dosage at the earliest symptoms, Imitrex will still help ease or eliminate pain and symptoms at any stage of a migraine.

This medication should be taken with water or other fluids, and may be taken with or without food.

It's important to note that Imitrex tablets are for treatment of migraines and are not the best solution for tension headaches, cluster headaches, or any other type of headache. A physician can suggest better options for non-migraines. For cluster headaches, Imitrex Injections are remarkably effective.

Ingredients:

Active ingredient: sumatriptan

Inactive ingredients: croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate, lactose, titanium dioxide dye

Patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in Imitrex should not use this medication.

Adverse Effects and Contraindications:

All prescription and non-prescription medications carry some risk of side effects and drug interactions. The prescribing physician should be made aware of all drugs being taken for the duration of treatment with Imitrex.

Side effects with this medication are unusual. Most are mild and pass quickly:
  • Flushing or feeling warm
  • Mild dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Muscle cramps
  • Drowsiness
Though rare, some patients experience more serious side effects which call for medical attention:
  • Pain, tightness, or heaviness in chest or throat
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing
  • Rash, hives, or swelling on the face, eyes, or lips
In extremely rare cases severe cardiac events, including heart attack, have been known to occur in patients using this medication.

Certain health conditions should be brought to the attention of a physician before taking Imitrex:
  • Poor blood circulation
  • Coronary heart disease or angina
  • High blood pressure
  • Liver disease
  • Ischemic bowel disease
  • Unusually severe headaches
The effects of Imitrex on unborn babies is unknown; however, it is known that Imitrex passes through breast milk and is harmful to infants. Use of Imitrex during pregnancy, or if trying to become pregnant, should be avoided.

Imitrex (sumatriptan) is a triptan medication used predominantly for alleviating pain and other symptoms in migraine and cluster headaches. It is a widely-used and highly effective treatment, and, when used properly, unlikely to produce serious side effects.

Each Imitrex Injection Refill Pack contains two injection cartridges, which fit in the injection pen and storage container included with the Imitrex Injection Treatment Pack. Cartridges are packaged in a protective carton which will protect the medication from damage and deterioration until use if a storage container is not available.

A prescription is not required to purchase the Imitrex Injection Refill Pack.

Understanding Imitrex

Triptan medications are uniquely effective in stopping migraines and cluster headaches. Both of these types of headaches respond best when treatment is administered at the earliest signs a headache is developing, which, in the case of migraines, may be auras, nausea or other related symptoms that aren't necessarily painful.

The speed at which the medication is delivered to the bloodstream is a very important factor, particularly for cluster headaches; this is why Imitrex and many other triptan medications are administered by injection. Some individuals are able to manage headaches with slower delivery methods, such as tablets or nasal sprays. Migraine sufferers who are averse to injections may want to consider these other Imitrex products instead of the Imitrex Injection Refill Pack:

Again these slower-acting versions are unlikely to be as effective as injections if treating cluster headaches.

When administered by injection effects are usually felt within 5 to 15 minutes, compared to 30 to 90 minutes with other administration methods. Injections are delivered subcutaneously in the upper arms, upper thighs, buttocks, or hips, and if using the Imitrex injection pen are virtually pain-free.

An Ounce of Prevention is Worth a Pound of Cure

Unfortunately there is no cure for migraines or cluster headaches, but taken at the earliest onset of symptoms Imitrex does the next-best thing in stopping a headache in its tracks. Because treatment is so time-sensitive it is critical to have Imitrex on-hand when needed, but stockpiling must be balanced with the fact that medication loses potency past its expiration date.

Each Imitrex Injection Refill Pack contains two cartridges; each cartridge contains 6 mg Imitrex. The standard dose is 6 mg (one cartridge), but individuals suffering from severe migraines or cluster headaches may use up to 12 mg. Never exceed 12 mg in a 24 hour period.

Utilizing other methods of headache alleviation after administering Imitrex are also beneficial, such as laying down and avoiding bright lights or loud noises. Avoid taking other pain medications, including those of the over-the-counter variety, while using Imitrex without first checking with a pharmacist or doctor.

Before Using Imitrex Injection Refill Pack

As mentioned above, Imitrex is unlikely to produce negative effects if used properly. Some individuals are at greater risk of side effects, however; check with a doctor before using Imitrex if you have:

  • Poor blood circulation
  • Coronary heart disease or angina
  • High blood pressure
  • Liver disease
  • Ischemic bowel disease
  • Unusually severe headaches

Medications used to treat depression and related conditions, including SSRIs, SNRIs, and MAOIs should check with a doctor or pharmacist before using Imitrex or any other triptan medication; though unusual, these medications can interfere with each other and may cause side effects or reduce effectiveness.

Women who are pregnant or nursing should avoid use of this or any other triptan medication.

Imitrex (sumatriptan) is a member of the triptan class of drugs, widely used to stop migraine and cluster headaches. Since the introduction of triptans in the early 1990s the medication has proven to be safe and effective; in fact, when administered by injection, it is one of the most effective treatments available for cluster headaches.

The medication is unlikely to alleviate symptoms of other types of headaches and will not prevent other types of pain; it is not a painkiller. It works by constricting swollen blood vessels in the brain, thus reducing pressure on the brain. This action often completely eliminates the pain associated with migraines and cluster headaches, as well as the nausea and auras sometimes present with migraines.

Fast & Effective Relief

The Imitrex Injection Treatment Pack is a complete kit containing everything needed to stop a migraine or cluster headache:

  • Injection pen activated by pressing the button on top.
  • Two syringe cartridges which simply need to be inserted into the injection pen.
  • Carrying case to protect the pen and cartridges from damage and exposure.

Like all triptan medications, Imitrex should be administered at the earliest signs a headache is developing, be that pain or auras. There is no benefit to using Imitrex in the absence of symptoms; it will not prevent new headaches from forming.

When administered at the early onset of symptoms headaches are often completely aborted. The medication will still provide some relief if taken at later stages of a headache, but may not completely eliminate it. It is because timing is so critical that triptans are often given via injection; it is the fastest way to get the medication flowing through the body. Use at earliest symptoms is particularly crucial in the notoriously difficult-to-treat cluster headaches. The Imitrex Injection Treatment Pack is easily carried on the go or stored at home, work, in the car or anywhere else for fast access when symptoms begin to develop.

Refill cartridges are available with the Imitrex Injection Refill Pack.

Treating Headaches with Imitrex

The cartridges included in the Imitrex Injection Treatment Pack as well as the refill pack each contain 6 mg of sumatriptan, which is the standard dose. Typical treatment consists of:

  • Administer 6 mg, or one dose, at the earliest symptoms of a headache.
  • If the headache persists after one hour, a second 6 mg dose may be administered.
  • Never exceed 12 mg in a 24 hour period.

Effects are usually felt within 5 to 15 minutes of administration. The injection pen included with the Imitrex Injection Treatment Pack is virtually pain-free; simply position the pen on the upper arms, upper thighs, hips, buttocks or other fatty area and press the button on top of the pen.

Use of other medications while taking Imitrex should be avoided without doctor approval; many patients do use other treatments, such as painkillers, along with triptans, but there is always a risk of side effects or reduced effectiveness when combining medications.

Other Options

Some patients are, understandably, disinclined to administer medications via injection. Imitrex is available in several less-intrusive forms, though, as mentioned above, these other administration methods are not as fast-acting and may have little effect on cluster headaches:

There are also a number of other triptan medications available in addition to the sumatriptan found in Imitrex, such as rizatriptan, zolmitriptan, naratriptan and others, most of which are also available in a variety of tablets, nasal sprays and injections. Searching our site for "triptan" will produce a wide range of options for combating migraine or cluster headaches if the Imitrex Injection Treatment Pack doesn't sound like the ideal choice.

Precautions & Warnings

Imitrex has proven to be a very safe medication if used as directed. However, there are some scenarios in which it may not be the best choice, particularly if there is a history of:

  • Poor blood circulation
  • Coronary heart disease or angina
  • High blood pressure
  • Liver disease
  • Ischemic bowel disease
  • Unusually severe headaches

Similarly there is a concern for side effects when Imitrex (or any triptan) is mixed with medications in the SSRI, SNRI, or MAOI categories; these medications are often used to treat depression or anxiety-related disorders.

Imitrex (and other triptans) should not be used if pregnant or nursing, or if trying to become pregnant.

Imitrex (sumatriptan) is a powerful abortive treatment usually prescribed to combat migraine headaches and associated symptoms, such as auras or light sensitivity.

There are a variety of administration options for Imitrex, including tablets and injections. Imitrex Nasal Spray is one of the fastest ways to administer Imitrex, second only to injections. Relief typically begins about 10 to 15 minutes after use. For most patients this medication will significantly diminish or eliminate migraine pain and related symptoms.

Administration by nasal spray also makes the medication available to patients unable to consume tablets due to medical or psychological issues.

Imitrex Nasal Spray is an abortive medication only and will not prevent migraines from happening or reduce the frequency with which they occur. It is not a cure for migraines. With the exception of cluster headaches, it has not proven effective for any other type of headache.

Imitrex Nasal Spray and Cluster Headaches:

The cause of the extremely painful cluster headache is unknown, and efforts to discover an effective treatment have been largely unsuccessful. Imitrex Nasal Spray is one of few medications available proven to reduce to the severity of cluster headaches, though many patients find Imitrex Injections more effective.

Though they work well for migraines, Imitrex Tablets have only a marginal effect on  cluster headaches.

Using Imitrex Nasal Spray:

Imitrex Nasal Spray, like other forms of Imitrex, is used as needed as soon as headache symptoms are noticed. Though most effective if used at the start of a headache, it will still help reduce pain at later stages as well.

The usual dose is one spray in a single nostril. A spray in each nostril is a double dose. Never exceed 40 mg of Imitrex Nasal Spray in a 24 hour period.

If pain is not eliminated or reduced to tolerable levels, additional doses may be taken as long as the total amount does not exceed 40 mg. If taking multiple doses, wait at least 2 hours after the previous spray.

It may be taken with or without food and water.

Some people do not respond to medications in the triptan class of drugs, and Imitrex is not effective on headaches other than migraines and cluster headaches. If Imitrex Nasal Spray has no effect, speak with a physician about trying a different treatment.

Overdose of this medication may have serious consequences. Seek medical attention immediately if more than 40 mg of Imitrex Nasal Spray is taken.

Ingredients:

Active ingredient: sumatriptan

Inactive ingredients: dibasic anhydrous sulfuric acid, potassium phosphate, monobasic sodium phosphate, water, sodium hydroxide

Adverse Effects:

All prescription and non-prescription medications carry some risk of side effects and drug interactions. This is only a partial list. It's important to read the insert included with the medication for a complete list of warnings and side effects.

Imitrex has been widely used since its introduction in the early 1990s. Most side effects are mild and pass quickly. However, occasionally some patients do have serious reactions to the medication that require medical attention:
  • Pain, tightness, or heaviness in chest or throat
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Allergic reactions
Imitrex Nasal Spray should not be used if pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breast feeding.

Though very rare, some patients have suffered heart attacks while taking Imitrex. It is unclear if the medication was a factor.

Contraindications:

Imitrex may cause severe side effects or complications in persons with certain health conditions:
  • Poor blood circulation
  • Coronary heart disease or angina
  • Liver disease
  • Ischemic bowel disease
Patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure should not use Imitrex in any form.

Imitrex Nasal Spray is an alternative administration method to deliver one of the most effective and fast-acting migraine or cluster headache treatments currently available. Stop waiting for the pain to stop!
Imitrex (sumatriptan) is usually prescribed to combat migraine headaches and associated symptoms, such as auras. When given by injection, Imitrex is also effective against cluster headaches.

Imitrex is an abortive medication, meaning it does not prevent a headache from occurring or reduce the frequency with which headaches occur, but it will stop a headache in progress. Results are best when the medication is taken at the earliest signs of a headache beginning.

Imitrex was the first medication available for migraine management in the triptan class of drugs. Since its appearance in the early 1990s, it has become one of the most frequently prescribed abortive migraine treatments in the world.

What Are Imitrex ODT Tablets?

In medicine, ODT stands for Orally Dissolving Tablet. In some parts of the world the term FDT, or Fast Dissolving Tablet, is more commonly used.

Imitrex ODT Tablets are essentially the same as regular Imitrex Tablets as far as strength and medical effect, but instead of being swallowed Imitrex ODT Tablets dissolve in the mouth. This method of delivery is advantageous for patients in a number of scenarios:
  • Patients with difficulty swallowing (dysphagia)
  • Patients unable to follow instructions
  • Patients unable to consume solids
  • Uncooperative Patients
  • Patients with an aversion to pills
Imitrex ODT Tablets also begin working faster than regular tablets, with effects felt in about 15 to 20 minutes, compared to about 30 minutes for regular tablets.

Taking Imitrex ODT Tablets:

Like other forms of Imitrex, Imitrex ODT Tablets are taken as needed at the earliest symptoms of a migraine. If unable to take at the start of a headache, Imitrex will still help mitigate headache pain at later stages.

This medication may be taken with or without food.

ODT Tablets are available in a variety of strengths, from 25 mg to 100 mg. If a smaller dose is only partially effective, additional doses may be taken as long as the amount does not exceed 200 mg in a 24 hour period. Additional doses should be taken at least 2 hours after the previous dose.

Other migraine medications, including other forms of Imitrex, should be avoided while taking Imitrex ODT Tablets unless instructed otherwise by a physician.

Imitrex ODT Tablets are effective only against migraine headaches and will have no effect on other types of headaches. For cluster headaches, see Imitrex Injections or Imitrex Nasal Spray.

Ingredients:

Active ingredient: sumatriptan

Inactive ingredients: sodium bicarbonate, calcium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous, croscarmellose sodium, microcrystalline cellulose, magnesium stearate

Adverse Effects:

Like all prescription and non-prescription medications, Imitrex ODT Tablets carry some risk of side effects and drug interactions. Patients should read the insert included with the medication in entirety prior to consumption.

Imitrex is a well-tested medication and most reported side effects are mild:
  • Flushing or feeling warm
  • Mild dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Muscle cramps
  • Drowsiness
Rarely Imitrex produces more severe side effects, which should be immediately be brought to the attention of physician:
  • Pain, tightness, or heaviness in chest or throat
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing
  • Rash, hives, or swelling (allergic reaction)
Imitrex is known to interact with certain other prescription medications. The physician prescribing Imitrex should be made aware of all other medications being taken.

Contraindications:

Patients with certain medical conditions are poor candidates for Imitrex. The risk of severe side effects is greater in patients suffering from:
  • Poor blood circulation
  • Coronary heart disease or angina
  • High blood pressure
  • Liver disease
  • Ischemic bowel disease
  • Unusual, or unusually severe, headaches
Patients with uncontrolled high blood pressure should not take Imitrex.

Use of Imitrex during pregnancy, if trying to become pregnant, or if breast feeding should be avoided unless explicitly instructed otherwise by a physician.

Imitrex ODT tablets are an ideal solution for fast and effective migraine management in patients who have difficulty with or an aversion to consuming traditional pills.
