Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturing country depending on the country of origin.

(Both brand and generic now available from the UK)

Cialis (tadalafil) is most frequently used to treat erectile dysfunction in men. It is also used under a different brand name to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension.

Cialis is not a cure for erectile dysfunction.

Who Uses Cialis?

This medication is most frequently used by men suffering from erectile dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction is a common problem and has many causes, ranging from the physical to the emotional. Very often the disorder is a result of a combination of multiple factors. Regardless of the cause, Cialis will help improve blood flow to the penis so a firm erection can be achieved and maintained for the duration of intercourse.

Cialis will not produce an erection without some sexual stimulation.

How Does it Work?

The mechanism of this drug is fairly complex. The active ingredient in Cialis is a phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor. This means it inhibits the production of phosphodiesterase type 5 in the body. Phosphodiesterase type 5 interacts with another chemical in the body, called cyclic GMP. Cyclic GMP relaxes smooth muscles and widens the blood vessels in the penis, allowing sufficient blood flow for a firm erection. By inhibiting the production of phosphodiesterase type 5, more cyclic GMP will be present in the body and erections will be easier to achieve.

In simpler words, Cialis helps improve blood flow to the penis, which restores the ability of the penis to function normally.

How is it Used?

This medication comes in tablet form and may be taken with or without food.

Cialis is typically used either as needed or taken daily in a smaller dose. Either way dosage will be determined by a physician and may be adjusted over the course the treatment.

When used as needed, it should be taken about 30 minutes before sexual activity. The medication often remains in the bloodstream for about 36 hours, and may remain effective for the duration of that time. For this reason it should not be taken more than once every 24 hours.

Ingredients:

Active ingredient: tadalafil

Inactive ingredients: triacetin, microcrystalline cellulose, croscarmellose sodium, titanium dioxide, iron oxide, hydroxypropyl cellulose, magnesium stearate, hypromellose, talc, lactose monohydrate, sodium lauryl sulfate

Patients with known hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in Cialis should not take this product.

Adverse Effects:

Most side effects are mild and stop after a few hours, including headache, indigestion, and a stuffy or runny nose.

A few men experience back or muscle aches several hours after taking Cialis.

In very rare cases some men have experienced sudden vision or hearing loss. Any change in vision or hearing while taking Cialis should be brought to the attention of a physician immediately.

Erections lasting more than 4 hours also warrant medical attention. Prolonged erections can damage the penis and be extremely painful.

Patients should read the information provided with this medication for a complete list of possible adverse effects and interactions prior to taking Cialis or any other medication.

Contraindications and Interactions:

There are some medical conditions which warrant special attention before taking Cialis:
  • History of heart disease or heart attack
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • History of stroke, angina, or high or low blood pressure
  • Sickle cell anemia or hemophilia
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Retinitis pigmentosa
  • Penile implants or abnormalities
Cialis may interact with other prescription and non-prescription medications. These interactions are not always serious but may interfere with effectiveness. The prescribing physician should be made aware of all medications being taken, including non-prescription medications, for the duration of treatment.

Why Cialis?

Erectile dysfunction is a frustrating and devastating condition for most men who experience it -- and often for their partners, too. Cialis offers a safe and effective solution for men to maintain active sex lives and healthy relationships.

Cialis Oral Jelly (tadalafil) offers a temporary solution to erectile dysfunction in men age 18 and up. It should not be used in patients under age 18 who may not be sexually mature; it can cause potentially serious complications.

This product contains the active ingredient tadalafil, which is best known by the brand name Cialis. The original, brand-name Cialis comes in tablets. Note that Cialis Oral Jelly is not produced by the manufacturer of Cialis tablets; the jelly's name is actually Tadalafil Oral Jelly. Since Cialis is so widely recognized, the jelly version was quickly dubbed Cialis Oral Jelly and continues to be most widely known as such.

Tadalafil tablets are also available as a generic and under a number of other brand names; likewise tadalafil jelly is available under a number of other brands. There is also a Viagra Oral Jelly available for those who prefer it to Cialis.

Product Overview

The most significant difference between Cialis Oral Jelly and Cialis tablets is administration method; the jelly is ideal for men who are averse to---or unable to---swallow tablets. Otherwise the products are virtually identical; they produce the same effects, begin working at the same speed, and last as long. They also carry the same risk of side effects.

Each box of Cialis Oral Jelly contains a number of satchels in assorted flavors. Each satchel contains one dose of tadalafil. Flavors include:

  • Banana
  • Grape
  • Lichi
  • Mango
  • Orange
  • Pineapple
  • Wine

Cialis Oral Jelly satchels should be stored at room temperature and not opened until immediately before use. Be sure to keep this product out of reach of children and pets; if it is accidentally consumed by unintended recipients medical attention should be sought immediately.

Getting the Most from Cialis Oral Jelly

Erectile dysfunction has many causes, ranging from psychological to physical, and is often the result of a combination of factors. In simple terms, Cialis Oral Jelly relaxes certain muscles which in turn allows for increased blood flow to the penis. This medication is usually effective regardless of the underlying cause of erectile dysfunction, but it is only a temporary fix and will not address those underlying causes in the long term.

A dose should be taken approximately 30 minutes prior to anticipated sexual activity. Effects start to be felt about 15 minutes after administration. Simply place a jelly tab under the tongue and allow it to dissolve. Avoid fatty foods right before or after administration; this may reduce effects.

For most men effects last about 36 hours, though they may begin to taper off after 24 hours. The maximum recommended dose is 20 mg in a 24-hour period; exceeding this greatly increases risk of side effects.

Like all erectile dysfunction treatments, sexual stimulation---be it physical or emotional---is needed to produce an erection. The medication will not produce spontaneous erections or increase sexual desire if no stimulation is present.

Warnings & Side Effects

Products containing tadalafil have been used by millions of men around the world with no problems. However, men with certain preexisting conditions are at greater risk of experiencing potentially dangerous complications, particularly when there is any history of:

  • Heart, circulation, or blood clotting problems
  • Liver or kidney impairment
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Stomach ulcers
  • Retinitis pigmentosa

Men who are otherwise healthy rarely experience side effects, and when they do occur are typically mild. Most commonly reported are:

  • Headache
  • Mild muscle aches
  • Mild stomach upset
  • Cold-like symptoms

Note that Cialis Oral Jelly, or any product containing tadalafil, can interact with other medications. Of particular concern with tadalafil products are nitrites. Nitrites are found in some medications used to treat angina, and are found in some recreation drugs, such as poppers. Nitrites should be avoided 48 hours before and after taking tadalafil. Individuals who seek medical attention for chest pain should be sure to notify doctors that tadalafil has been taken.

Female Cialis (tadalafil) is a PDE5 inhibitor which also improves blood flow and lowers blood pressure. This product contains the same active ingredient as the male erectile dysfunction treatment, Cialis.

In women, female Cialis is thought to improve the enjoyment of sex and increase orgasm predominantly by the improved blood flow, which engorges the clitoris, labia, and vagina with blood. Greater blood supply improves sensitivity, helps with natural lubrication, and promotes orgasm.

Female Cialis does not alter mental or emotional states. It will not cause a woman to seek sex from anyone willing to participate. Nor is it an aphrodisiac; some stimulation---be it physical or emotional---is required for desire to grow.

Some women may be interested in Addyi rather than female Cialis; this medication was specifically designed for women and works by balancing chemicals in the brain.

Treatment Overview

Taking female Cialis is similar in both men and women. The medication begins working about 30 minutes to 1 hour after administration, and remains effective for an impressive 36 hours on average.

General treatment guidelines are:

  • Take a single dose 30 minutes to 1 hour before anticipated intimacy.
  • Do not exceed 20 mg in a single dose.
  • Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours.
  • Do not take more than three doses per week.

In most cases women are started on 10 mg doses. If a woman feels this dose is too strong, or if side effects are difficult to deal with, dosage should be reduced to 5 mg. On the other hand, some women feel 10 mg is not strong enough, and may be advised to take 15 or 20 mg, assuming no serious side effects are present.

Speed of effectiveness will vary to some degree between individuals. Most women quickly figure out how quickly the medication begins working and can adjust dose-timing accordingly. Note that eating heavy or high-fat meals may interfere with the speed of effectiveness, slowing it considerably.

What to Expect

Many women who have taken female Cialis agree that sex is more pleasurable and orgasm is easier to achieve. Sensitivity is increased, making physical stimulation greater. Natural lubrication is also improved, further increasing the enjoyability of sex. Though not a direct result of the medication, better sex may make women more interested in it as well.

Some women do not notice any particular change; this is likely due in part to natural variance (not everyone reacts the same to a given medication), but also partly due to the underlying cause. Cialis use in women is not well-studied, and there are likely a number of limiting factors; for example, it may not address lack of interest in sex as a side effect of other medications.

Female Cialis should be tried a few times before deciding it doesn't work, assuming no serious side effects, however. If there is no increase in pleasure after several tries, it's probably not going to work. Alternatively, if taking 10 mg, dosage may be increased up to 20 mg per dose.

Precautions

Before taking female Cialis, women with other, preexisting medical conditions and/or taking other medications should be sure to speak with a doctor regarding safety, risks, and warning signs.

Conditions of concern include:

  • Cardiovascular conditions
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Liver or kidney impairment
  • Sickle cell anemia or hemophilia
  • Stomach ulcers

And other medications of concern include:

  • Any medication that contains nitrates, including nitroglycerin
  • Any medication that raises or lowers blood pressure
  • Other PDE5 inhibitors
  • Antiviral medications
  • Anticonvulsant medications
  • Antidepressant medications
  • Alpha-blocker medications

A woman with the above medical conditions or taking the above medications should not necessarily rule out female Cialis use, though a doctor may advise avoiding it. Solutions include dosage modifications, alternative medications, and so forth.

Recreational drugs, including alcohol, can cause a rapid, dangerous drop in blood pressure, and often mask warning symptoms. These drugs are best avoided when female Cialis is taken, and should never be used in excess.

Grapefruit and grapefruit juices should also be avoided with female Cialis.

Adverse Effects

Most women using female Cialis as directed do not experience any side effects, or experience only mild side effects. Common side effects include:

  • Headache
  • Muscle aches
  • Backache
  • Nasal congestion
  • Indigestion
  • Hot flashes

The above are usually mild, and usually fade away within the first few hours of taking a dose. If they become severe, or persist for longer than 24 hours, medical attention should be sought. Do not take more female Cialis, or any PDE5 inhibitor, unless a doctor approves it.

Rarely more severe side effects can develop. Though usually associated with too much Cialis or taking it more often than advised, they do also sometimes occur in patients who take it exactly as directed. Severe side effects that call for rapid medical attention include:

  • Chest pain
  • Symptoms of heart attack
  • Symptoms of stroke
  • Vision changes
  • Hearing changes
  • Loss of vision or hearing

Note that vision or hearing changes or loss are nearly always temporary; vision or hearing usually returns to normal after the medication leaves the system. In very rare cases, however, they are not reversible. Individuals with a history of vision or hearing issues may want to avoid this medication. If any vision or hearing changes are experienced while taking female Cialis, even if mild and temporary, use of the medication---and any other PDE5 inhibitor---should stop.

The effects of female Cialis on unborn or breastfeeding babies have not been studied. It is probably best to avoid this medication if pregnant or breastfeeding. At a minimum, consult a doctor before use.
