Some of the items on this page may be marked "Requires Authorization". Why's this? Kiwi must verify the customer's medical history in order to ensure the medication is necessary and used according the direction of a licensed medical practitioner. If you have already demonstrated this, then you may be able to view this product. If not, please email us using the contact page. Medicines have benefits and some have risks. Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturing country depending on the country of origin.

Benzac AC Gel is used to treat mild to moderate acne. Most users notice significant improvements within one month of starting treatment.

The gel is applied directly to acne lesions where it opens clogged pores, absorbs the released contents and kills bacteria. Ultimately skin is left soft, smooth and blemish-free.

Note that the active ingredient in this product, benzoyl peroxide, can cause irritation, redness and inflammation if used improperly. Likewise it can bleach hair, clothing and upholstery; use with care.

How Benzac AC Gel Works

The benzoyl peroxide in Benzac AC Gel produces a mild peeling effect on the skin to which it is applied. The peeling helps break down the keratin that clogs pores; once removed, the sebum, dead skin cells and other contents trapped within the pore are released.

Benzoyl peroxide also kills the Propionibacterium acnes bacteria thought to cause or exacerbate acne. Unlike antibiotic treatments, bacteria cannot develop resistance to benzoyl peroxide.

Benzac AC Gel also contains Acrylates Copolymers, which is where the AC in the product's name comes from. Combined with glycerine, Acrylates Copolymers absorb oils such as sebum while leaving soft, moisturizing glycerin on the skin.

Getting the Most from Benzac AC Gel

The gel should be applied only to affected areas (pimples) and not to healthy skin. It's important to follow instructions carefully to achieve maximum benefit with minimal side effects.

The first step in eliminating acne with Benzac AC Gel is to choose a strength; the gel is available in 2.5%, 5% and 10% benzoyl peroxide solutions. Individuals new to Benzac AC Gel should always start with the lower 2.5% or 5% versions; 10% gels are reserved for those who find lower strengths insufficient.

The reason for starting with lower strengths is because the peeling effects of benzoyl peroxide do, by definition, cause skin irritation. Some individuals are considerably more sensitive to the medication's effects than others; there's no way to anticipate reactions until the gel is applied. Thus treatment begins cautiously and is adjusted as individual patient response is established.

A typical course of treatment is as follows:

  • Apply gel to affected areas once per day, rinsing it off after two hours.
  • After three days, if no irritation or other side effects develop, begin applying the gel to affected areas once per day in the evening and leave on overnight.
  • After one week, if no side effects develop, the gel can be applied twice per day, morning and evening.
  • If no significant improvements are noticed, a higher strength gel can be applied.
  • If pain or severe irritation develop, reduce strength and/or frequency of applications.

There is no benefit to be had by using a higher strength gel if a lower strength is working; to the contrary, greater irritation makes the skin more vulnerable to developing new lesions.

Most users notice significant improvements within one month of starting treatment. If improvements are noticed, treatment may continue until acne is cleared up, and treatment may be repeated as-needed if acne returns. If no significant improvements are noticed after a month of treatment, or if side effects develop, alternative options should be considered. A doctor or pharmacist may be able to suggest more suitable treatments.

Many Benzac AC Gel users find skin becomes uncomfortably dry as treatment continues, despite the moisturizing glycerin in the gel. A light moisturizer can help significantly here; just be sure to choose one that is non-comedogenic (meaning it won't clog pores), such as Olive Nourishing Day Cream.

Using a gentle cleanser free of harsh soaps and other potentially irritating ingredients, such as Trilogy Very Gentle Cleansing Cream, may also help prevent acne outbreaks. Of course, eating well and staying hydrated promotes general skin health and may also help prevent blemishes.
