Choosing the Ideal Cough Treatment
Duro-Tuss Dry Cough Liquid - Regular is intended to be used short term, for only a few consecutive days. Short term use is usually sufficient to manage dry coughs from acute illness, such as a cold, or occasional flare-ups in chronic conditions, such as asthma. The medication should not be used long term, for weeks or months, to manage chronic coughing unless instructed to do so by a doctor; long-term use increases risk of side effects.
As Duro-Tuss Dry Cough Liquid - Regular is a cough suppressant, which inhibits coughing, it should not be used to treat productive coughs which expel phlegm. For productive coughs, consider Duro-Tuss Chesty Cough Liquid Regular or Duro-Tuss Chesty Cough Liquid Forte, both of which help loosen and expel phlegm.
A stronger version of Duro-Tuss Dry Cough Liquid - Regular can be found in Duro-Tuss Dry Cough Liquid - Forte. The Forte version contains 15 mg pholcodine per 5 ml of syrup, while the Regular version contains 5 mg pholcodine per 5 ml of syrup. This is a very important distinction when measuring doses, particularly for children; the Forte version should not be administered to patients under 12.
Finally, Duro-Tuss Expectorant Cough Liquid contains the cough suppressant pholcodine as well as bromhexine hydrochloride, which helps relieve chest congestion.
