This means that you will get your period on the 7 days that you take no pills or inactive pills. Side effects could include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Breast tenderness;\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Headaches;<\/li>\n<li>Bloating and weight gain;<\/li>\n<li>Nausea;<\/li>\n<li>Spotting or bleeding between periods;<\/li>\n<li>Potentially increased risk of blood clots.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Extended Cycle Pills<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Extended cycle pills are a form of combination pill, containing both estrogen and progestin.<\/p>\n<p>However, these pills allow women to have longer menstrual cycles, and are designed to be taken for longer. Active pills are typically taken for 12 or 13 weeks, followed by no pills or inactive pills for one week. You will still\u00a0get your period, just less often.<\/p>\n<p>Like the combination pill, extended cycle pills are 98% effective as long as they are taken at the same time every day.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Advantages of Extended Cycle Pills<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The advantages of extended cycle pills are the same as combination pills, as well as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Fewer periods;<\/li>\n<li>Potentially lighter, shorter periods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Disadvantages of Extended Cycle Pills<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The extended cycle pills have the same disadvantages as the combination pill, with the addition of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Possibility of spotting between periods;<\/li>\n<li>Possibility of heavier periods.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Minipills<\/h2>\n<p>Minipills contain only the progestin hormone. They must be taken at the same time every day, and every pill is an active one.<\/p>\n<p>Minipills prevent pregnancy in a similar way to combination pills:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>It stops sperm from reaching a female egg by thickening cervical mucus;<\/li>\n<li>It thins the lining of the uterus so the fertilized egg cannot attach.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>However, minipills do not stop ovaries releasing eggs as consistently as a combination pill.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Like combination pills, the minipill is approximately 99% effective when taken correctly.
