Xl-80 (codeine phosphate/chlorpheniramine maleate) is a cold and allergy treatment that contains both a cough suppressant and an antihistamine. It relieves symptoms of coughing, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes and other cold-like symptoms.
This product should not be used to treat chronic cough such as from asthma, emphysema, or smoking. Not only may cough suppression be counterproductive in these cases, codeine, like all opioids, may cause respiratory suppression. At a minimum, speak with a doctor before using Xl-80 if there are any chronic breathing ailments present.
Xl-80 is generally considered safe for use in patients 6 years old and up, though pediatric doses are smaller than adult doses. Chlorpheniramine alone is sometimes used in children as young as 1 year, but codeine's breathing-suppression properties make it unsuitable for very young patients.
Feel Better Fast with Xl-80
Xl-80 comes in tablets, each of which contain 10 mg of codeine, which is a narcotic cough suppressant, and 2 mg of chlorpheniramine, which is an antihistamine. Tablets may be split to produce smaller doses if needed. Taking tablets on a full stomach may ease side effects of nausea, but food is completely optional.
Like most allergy and cold treatments, Xl-80 is used as-needed:
The medication starts to work after 15 to 30 minutes, with effects peaking 1 to 2 hours after administration. Effects begin to taper off after 4 to 6 hours. Codeine reduces the urge to cough, while chlorpheniramine inhibits the release of histamines which cause runny nose, watery eyes, itchy throat, nose or eyes, and other allergy symptoms. Codeine will also minimize any minor aches and pains associated with cold or flu.
Treatment should generally not extend past 7 consecutive days. Prolonged use of codeine will likely result in development of tolerance, in which larger amounts of the medication is needed to produce the same results. If tolerance does develop, refraining from use of Xl-80 for several weeks should restore effectiveness. Long-term use can also promote physical and/or psychological addiction.
If symptoms are not significantly cleared up after 7 days of treatment, or if symptoms worsen during treatment, or a high fever develops, it may indicate a more serious condition and warrants medical attention.
Warnings Before Use
It's important to note that both codeine and chlorpheniramine may be found in other commonly-used cold, flu, or allergy medications, including those available over-the-counter. Pay close attention to ingredients to ensure daily doses are not exceeded.
Likewise, even if ingredients differ, similar medications may interact with Xl-80 and cause complications or exacerbate side effects. If in doubt of the safety of mixing other medications with Xl-80, check with a doctor or pharmacist first. Any drug which causes drowsiness or slows breathing is of particular concern, including alcohol.
Both codeine and chlorpheniramine may cause drowsiness and delayed reactions in some individuals. Use caution performing complex or dangerous tasks until effects are known.
Side effects are typically mild, including:
Rarely more serious side effects are experienced, which call for immediate medical attention. Warning signs include:
Xl-80, like any codeine product, should not be used while pregnant or breast-feeding. It may cause potentially fatal complications in the baby.
