Always read the label and use only as directed. If symptoms persist or you have side effects see your health professional. Brands and generics both contain the same active ingredient(s) and are medically equivalent. Some brands are marketed under different names by the same manufacturing country depending on the country of origin.

Xl-80 (codeine phosphate/chlorpheniramine maleate) is a cold and allergy treatment that contains both a cough suppressant and an antihistamine. It relieves symptoms of coughing, sneezing, runny nose, watery eyes and other cold-like symptoms.

This product should not be used to treat chronic cough such as from asthma, emphysema, or smoking. Not only may cough suppression be counterproductive in these cases, codeine, like all opioids, may cause respiratory suppression. At a minimum, speak with a doctor before using Xl-80 if there are any chronic breathing ailments present.

Xl-80 is generally considered safe for use in patients 6 years old and up, though pediatric doses are smaller than adult doses. Chlorpheniramine alone is sometimes used in children as young as 1 year, but codeine's breathing-suppression properties make it unsuitable for very young patients.

Feel Better Fast with Xl-80

Xl-80 comes in tablets, each of which contain 10 mg of codeine, which is a narcotic cough suppressant, and 2 mg of chlorpheniramine, which is an antihistamine. Tablets may be split to produce smaller doses if needed. Taking tablets on a full stomach may ease side effects of nausea, but food is completely optional.

Like most allergy and cold treatments, Xl-80 is used as-needed:

  • Start with 1 tablet (10 mg codeine, 2 mg chlorpheniramine) every 6 hours.
  • If insufficient, dosage may be increased to 2 tablets (20 mg codeine, 4 mg chlorpheniramine) every 4 to 6 hours as-needed.
  • Do not exceed 120 mg codeine in one day.
  • Do not exceed 24 mg chlorpheniramine in one day.

The medication starts to work after 15 to 30 minutes, with effects peaking 1 to 2 hours after administration. Effects begin to taper off after 4 to 6 hours. Codeine reduces the urge to cough, while chlorpheniramine inhibits the release of histamines which cause runny nose, watery eyes, itchy throat, nose or eyes, and other allergy symptoms. Codeine will also minimize any minor aches and pains associated with cold or flu.

Treatment should generally not extend past 7 consecutive days. Prolonged use of codeine will likely result in development of tolerance, in which larger amounts of the medication is needed to produce the same results. If tolerance does develop, refraining from use of Xl-80 for several weeks should restore effectiveness. Long-term use can also promote physical and/or psychological addiction.

If symptoms are not significantly cleared up after 7 days of treatment, or if symptoms worsen during treatment, or a high fever develops, it may indicate a more serious condition and warrants medical attention.

Warnings Before Use

It's important to note that both codeine and chlorpheniramine may be found in other commonly-used cold, flu, or allergy medications, including those available over-the-counter. Pay close attention to ingredients to ensure daily doses are not exceeded.

Likewise, even if ingredients differ, similar medications may interact with Xl-80 and cause complications or exacerbate side effects. If in doubt of the safety of mixing other medications with Xl-80, check with a doctor or pharmacist first. Any drug which causes drowsiness or slows breathing is of particular concern, including alcohol.

Both codeine and chlorpheniramine may cause drowsiness and delayed reactions in some individuals. Use caution performing complex or dangerous tasks until effects are known.

Side effects are typically mild, including:

  • Constipation
  • Drowsiness
  • Mild dizziness
  • Restlessness
  • Dry mouth
  • Stuffy nose

Rarely more serious side effects are experienced, which call for immediate medical attention. Warning signs include:

  • Hallucinations
  • Severe confusion
  • Seizures
  • Severe headache
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Chest pain
  • Vision changes
  • Severe anxiety

Xl-80, like any codeine product, should not be used while pregnant or breast-feeding. It may cause potentially fatal complications in the baby.

Codis (aspirin, codeine) provides relief from mild to moderate pain, as well as reduces fever and inflammation. The medication is safe for use in patients 16 year of age and up. Patients who are under 16, who have a major medical condition, or who are very elderly should discuss use with a doctor; adjusted dosage may be required.

Like many pain relievers, this medication comes in tablets. Note, however, that Codis tablets should be dissolved in water. The resulting medicated water is then consumed.

Fast & Effective Pain Relief

Codis combines the pain-reducing properties of aspirin with the narcotic effects of codeine. Together the two ingredients are far more potent at eliminating pain. Codis is often used to provide relief from:

  • Headaches
  • Migraines
  • Arthritis
  • Backache
  • Toothaches
  • Menstrual cramps
  • Fibrositis
  • Neuralgia
  • Strains or sprains
  • Other injuries

Relief usually begins 10 to 30 minutes after administration, and lasts around 6 hours. Additional doses can be taken every 4 to 6 hours as-needed to manage pain.

While often used in chronic conditions such as arthritis, Codis is typically used for short-term flare-ups, rarely for longer than three consecutive days. Longer use can produce a few complications, most notably:

  • Continued use may promote tolerance to the medication, reducing its effectiveness;
  • Use beyond three days increases risk of physical addiction, which may produce physical withdrawal symptoms when use stops.

If treating chronic pain, tolerance can often be prevented by alternating between different types of medication. However, though codeine is often used in long-term pain management, it is generally not a good idea to take the high levels of aspirin found in Codis over the long-term.

Dosage & Administration

Each Codis Tablet contains 500 mg aspirin and 8 mg codeine. As mentioned above, Codis tablets are designed to be dissolved in water prior to consumption.

Administration is simple:

  • Dissolve 1 or 2 tablets in a glass of water and consume immediately.
  • Repeat as-needed every 4 to 6 hours.
  • Do not exceed 8 tablets in 24 hours.

Codis can cause drowsiness in some patients; use with caution until effects are known. If pain worsens, or is still severe enough to require treatment after several days, a doctor should be consulted.

Warnings & Adverse Effects

As is the case with most medications, there is a chance of experiencing side effects from Codis. Relatively common side effects are usually mild and not cause for concern, including:

  • Constipation
  • Stomach upset
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Euphoria
  • Tinnitus
  • Vertigo

Rarely more serious side effects are experienced. Using large doses of Codis, or using the medication long-term, increases risk of serious adverse reactions. Warning signs which warrant medical attention include:

  • Difficulty breathing
  • Blood in vomit or stools
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Severe confusion
  • Chest pain
  • Fainting
  • Seizures

Unborn or nursing babies and young children may develop potentially life-threatening complications, such as suppressed breathing, if exposed to codeine. Use in young children should be strictly avoided without medical supervision, and mothers who are breast-feeding or in the third trimester of pregnancy should avoid using Codis or any codeine product.

Patients with any preexisting medical condition should discuss Codis use with a doctor before starting treatment; it may not be suitable in all cases.

Codis is known to interact with a wide range of other medications, supplements and recreational drugs, including:

  • Sedatives, including alcohol and marijuana
  • Blood thinners
  • Antidepressants
  • Antipsychotics
  • Some diuretics
  • Some antibiotics
  • Some diabetes medications
  • Some cancer medications

There are many other medications which may cause complications or lose effectiveness if mixed with Codis. Check with a doctor or pharmacist before mixing treatments.

Note that Codis contains relatively large amounts of aspirin. Side effects of aspirin also apply to Codis. Check labels of other medications being taken, particularly cold and flu remedies (in which aspirin is a common ingredient), to avoid taking too much aspirin.

Codis

Remember "Empirin" that we all had as kids when we had coughs and colds? Same thing. I like this better than my prescriptions for Vicodin or Vicoprofen because a)I wouldn't take acetaminphen on a be...t and b) ibuprofen isn't all that great, either. Aspirin with the somewhat lesser amt of codeine than my prescription, and doesn't play with my mood the way the prescription amount does (a sure thing to get you into taking it for more than pain!!!), does the job when I have acute pain from a ruptured disc and can't sleep. BE CAREFUL with this stuff, tho! Codeine is codeine!!!
