products that others do not have - click here to view our pain relief products.
Zohydro (hydrocodone bitartrate) is an opiate agonist used
primarily as a painkiller. It is unique from other hydrocodone
products in that it does not contain any other active ingredients,
such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.Additional active
ingredients in other products often limit dosage strength and
duration of treatment.
Because Zohydro does not contain any other active ingredients, it
is available in a higher dosage strength than other medications
containing hydrocodone bitartrate, providing greater pain relief
with fewer severe side effects.
Zohydro is similar to, but more powerful than, other well-known
hydrocodone painkillers such as Vicodin and Oxycontin.
Who Uses Zohydro?
Zohydro is for patients experiencing chronic moderate to severe
pain who need around-the-clock pain management. It is a powerful,
fast-acting and long-lasting medication, with each dose remaining
effective for 12 hours.
This medication is advantageous for patients requiring long-term
pain relief, as it offers all the pain-killing benefits of
hydrocodone without the added risk of serious adverse reactions
from other active ingredients.
Zohydro also offers strong pain relief for patients unable to take
acetaminophen due to existing liver complications, as well as
patients hypersensitive to additional active ingredients found in
similar opioid medications.
How Does it Work?
Zohydro alters the perception of pain, raising the pain threshold
while lowering the emotional response to pain, by interacting with
opioid receptors throughout the nervous system.
In other words, it reduces pain and allows the patient to ignore
any remaining pain, if it is not eliminated completely.
Physicians may recommend Zohydro be used with other medications,
such as anti-inflammatories or muscle relaxants, to further address
pain as well as the underlying cause of the pain.
How is it Taken?
Zohydro is a tablet available in a variety of dosage strengths,
which will be determined by the prescribing physician. Dosage
strength may be adjusted over the course of treatment according to
patient response.
Each tablet is effective for 12 hours, so Zohydro need only be
taken twice a day for 24 hour relief from chronic pain.
Missed doses may be taken when remembered if needed for pain, but
the next dose should be moved back accordingly. Never take more
than the prescribed dosage amount. Taking too much Zohydro can lead
to severe, even fatal, side effects.
Like all opioids, Zohydro has the potential to be both physically
and psychologically addictive. Patients may be monitored for
symptoms of addiction. Because of the physical addiction potential,
dosage strength may be slowly reduced over time when treatment ends
to prevent withdrawal symptoms.

Adverse Effects:
Patients should read the information provided with the product
for a complete list of possible adverse effects and interactions
prior to taking Zohydro or any other medication.
In some patients Zohydro may cause sleepiness, confusion, and
delayed reactions. Activities such as driving may need to be
restricted accordingly. Alcohol may considerably worsen these side
effects. If severe confusion or severe dizziness occurs, seek
medical attention.
Hydrocodone bitartrate causes respiratory depression in some
patients. Any difficulty breathing while taking Zohydro warrants
immediate emergency medical attention.
As mentioned above, Zohydro may be both physically and
psychologically addictive after prolonged use. Long-time users
should not stop taking Zohydro without physician approval, so that
any withdrawal symptoms can be monitored and addressed.
Women should not take Zohydro while pregnant. Women planning to
become pregnant or women who are nursing should discuss using
Zohydro with a physician.
Contraindications and Interactions:
Zohydro is known to interact with certain other prescription
and non-prescription medications. These interactions are
not always serious but may interfere with effectiveness. The
prescribing physician should be made aware of all medications being
taken, including non-prescription medications, for the duration of
treatment.
