Viagra
(
sildenafil citrate) is perhaps the most widely-recognized
oral medication for erectile dysfunction in the world. Launched in
1998, in many areas Viagra is now considered the gold standard
treatment for male impotence.
Erectile dysfunction impacts countless men worldwide. Once
prevalent mostly among aging men, in modern times the condition
frequently affects many youthful males as well. Erection problems
often lead to dejection and stress in all aspects of life, not just
the bedroom.
Myths & Misinformation:
Misinformation about Viagra abounds. In reality, Viagra is a
relatively simple treatment which millions of men rely on to
achieve and sustain an erection firm enough for intercourse:
- In simple terms Viagra relaxes muscles in the penis, improving
blood flow so an erection can develop.
- An erection will not occur without sexual stimulation.
- After stimulation stops, blood will leave the penis and it will
become flaccid again.
- Viagra is not an aphrodisiac -- it does not increase sexual
desire.
- It has no impact on fertility, though it may aid ejaculation in
men who have difficulty doing so.
- It is not possible to buy Viagra without a prescription; such
offers should be viewed with suspicion.
If taken according to doctor instructions, Viagra is a very safe
medication. Almost all severe side effects have resulted from
taking more than the prescribed dose or using Viagra when
pre-existing physical or medical conditions indicated use was
unwise.
Using Viagra to Restore Intimacy:
Ideally a dose of Viagra is taken about 30 to 45 minutes before
intimacy is anticipated. The medication peaks around 2 hours after
taking a pill, after which effects begin to slowly wear off.
Effects will be completely gone after 5 or 6 hours.
Tablets are available in dosage strengths ranging from 25 mg to 100
mg. Elderly patients or those with certain health conditions are
often started on lower doses, which may be raised if effects are
inadequate.
Viagra should be used only once in a 24 hour period. Taking more
than the prescribed dose can lead to dangerous side effects.
Patients on lower doses for health reasons may also be advised to
use the medication less frequently; once every 48 hours instead of
every 24.
Precautions & Side Effects:
Certain physical conditions and prescription medications increase
the risks of experiencing dangerous side effects while taking
Viagra:
- It may cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure if used with
medications containing nitrates. Many treatments for chest pains
and heart disorders contain nitrates; it is also found in some
recreational drugs.
- It may cause complications in any patient who has had a recent
heart attack or stroke, has coronary artery disease, heart, liver
or kidney disease, or congestive heart failure.
- It should be used with caution in patients with blood cell or
bleeding disorders, such as hemophilia, sickle cell anemia, or
leukemia.
- It may cause complications in patients with penile implants or
penis deformities.
- It should not be used by patients with severe liver or kidney
failure.
- It should not be used by patients who are advised to avoid
intercourse for health reasons.
In rare cases the medication has caused vision impairment. Usually
effects are transient and include blurred vision, light sensitivity
and seeing a blue tint. Even more rarely hearing impairment has
occurred.
