Zydol (tramadol)
is used to treat chronic moderate to severe pain, as well as
post-surgical pain. It is an opioid analgesic which effects the
central nervous system, changing the way the body feels and reacts
to pain. It may be both psychologically and physically addictive
with long-term use.
Chronic Pain Treatment with Zydol
Outside of medical facilities, this medication is most often used
to treat chronic back pain or pain arising from rheumatoid
arthritis. It may also be sent home with post-surgical patients,
and sees some use in fibromyalgia and restless legs syndrome
treatment.
Treatment is usually administered via tablet. Dosage strength
depends on the condition, severity of pain, and overall patient
health. Very often patients are started on lower doses of 50 or 100
mg, which may be increased if providing insufficient
relief.
Once the ideal dose has been established, administration is
straightforward:
- Take the correct number of tablets either at the first symptoms
of pain or every 4 to 6 hours as needed.
- Swallow tablets whole; do not chew, crush or dissolve.
- It may be taken with or without food.
- If nausea occurs, try taking with bland foods; laying down may
also help.
- Drink plenty of fluids during treatment to prevent
constipation.
- Do not exceed 400 mg in one day; consult a doctor if pain is
not adequately suppressed.
- Taking more than the prescribed dose, or administering the
medication by snorting, inhaling, injecting, or any other
technique, may result in dangerous side effects.
Many
patients find that long-term use of Zydol results in tolerance to
the drug, in which it gradually becomes less effective. Alternating
between this and another painkiller may slow the process; in
extreme cases an alternative painkiller may need to be found. Speak
with a doctor about options.
If Zydol is no longer needed, dosage strength may be gradually
tapered off to prevent physical withdrawal
symptoms.
Precautions & Side Effects
Zydol may not be the ideal treatment for patients with certain
pre-existing conditions, notably:
- Asthma, COPD, or other breathing difficulties
- Liver or kidney issues
- History of mental illness or depression
- History of drug abuse or addiction
- Head or brain injuries
- History of seizures
Other
medications, both prescription and non-prescription, as well as
alcohol and street drugs, may interact with Zydol, producing
potentially harmful side effects. Other painkillers, drugs that
induce drowsiness, and alcohol are of particular concern. Speak
with a doctor about potential complications before mixing
medications; use alcohol with extreme caution.
In otherwise healthy adults side effects are both rare and
typically mild; often they will disappear entirely as the body
adjusts to treatment:
- Constipation
- Headache
- Dry mouth
- Drowsiness or Dizziness
- Nausea and vomiting
Serious
reactions are even more rare, but do happen on occasion. Contact a
doctor if experiencing the following while taking
Zydol:
- Fainting
- Seizures
- Severe stomach pain
- Hallucinations
- Difficulty urinating
- Flu-like symptoms
- Difficulty swallowing or breathing
Patients
of 75 years or older are at greater risk of serious side effects;
be alert for warning symptoms, and don't hesitate to seek medical
help if in doubt.
This medication does pose a small risk to unborn or nursing babies;
women who are pregnant or nursing should avoid use unless the
benefits clearly outweigh the risks.
Legal Issues
Though not as widely abused as many drugs, Zydol has seen some
abuse among recreational drug users. As a result, this medication's
purchase, transport, possession and use may be restricted in some
areas. Clients are responsible for complying with local laws. A
doctor or pharmacist will likely be able to answer any questions if
you're unsure about laws in your area.
